Anyone applied for https://www.gov.uk/global-health-insurance-card recently?

I'm wondering if it was quick to receive.

My EHIC expired end of May, and I go to Poland in 6 weeks, so I need to apply for the GHIC. However, the website has been down this weekend and not allowing to even start an application. I am hoping it's just down for the weekend for maintenance or something.

I think mine only took a week or two :)

Website also showing down for me unfortunately, I'm sure it'll be resolved come tomorrow

Mine only took a week or two too.

When you apply you receive an email with a reference number to quote if you haven't received your card, so you should be ok even if it's delayed.

I'm going to Porto at the end of the month and had totally forgotten this part of travel. You're right though the website gives an error 503.

My partner got hers in just over a week. It's worth noting the EHIC is still valid until it's expiry date.

Bit of an interest bump.

Our EIHCs have expired, looked like I would have to get one of the GHICs which don't cover as many countries.

Funny thing is my EU partner is still eligible for an EIHC from the UK and I can be added as an additional to the card so I can get the EIHC cover.

Seems a bit bizarre but at least it's cover for Norway and Iceland too now.

Just remember it's a bare minimum emergency thing, and you should always consider getting proper travel insurance too...

Never had to use either, but it's one of those time that you won't bother with it and find out that you could have done with it.

If I'm being quite honest - I don't even know what circumstances you'd use it for. I was under the impression it was for more basic things.

Has anyone ever had to make use of either?

I used my EHIC on my first Trip to Sweden in 2013
Got infection in my ear and it was pushing on nerves and all sorts in my head/neck got temporary (thank F) paralysis "Bells palsy"
Was in hospital for 5 days IV AB, was horrendous blah blah lol...

Was so easy to claim the cost back when i got back to UK.
Had to pay the bill to SWE first, about 25000kr then send a copy of the bank statement and receipt from Sweden to claim the money back.
Was an absolute breeze when i did it... zero issues.
