Toyota - Infotainment Synch Issue

Just downsized the Kia Sportage to a new Toyota Yaris Hybrid. Apart from wishing I'd gone for the Cross it's a smart little motor and already getting something like 76 MPG with the EV even kicking in when power cruising on the motorway with a light foot. The lateral correction can also be a bit disconcerting when it kicks in but for now I've left that and the proximity radar anti collision system enabled.

However getting a bit frustrated with the Infotainment so wonder if anyone familiar with Toyotas can help. Rather than providing a self contained SatNav etc. system, Toyota do it on the cheap by linking it via your Mobile Phone and Android Auto. The problem I'm getting is that I can only get the (Google) Map display to appear with the phone connected via a USB lead. If it's in the car relying on Bluetooth then I get the message "Service not available on this model." The link must be working as when I get home I can log into the My Toyota App and get details of the journey history. I guess it could be the phone, quite an old model Samsung S8 (I think), isn't fully linking.

If the problem persists I'll get back to the dealer or if they ring me to check how I'm getting on with the vehicle, but it seems a bit odd.

I was under the impression that wireless car play for Apple or Android depended on which head unit you have.

If you have a compatible wireless headunit you can go into settings and select your phone as the wireless link. I believe this is separate to the my Toyota app.

Consider yourself lucky the S8 works by cable as my A53 does not work at all and is another reason I'm going fto ditch the phone !

That’s strange even my Motorola G8 Power from 2020 which cost £165.82 running Android 11 works over USB cable for Android Auto.

As said it probably doesn't have wireless android auto. You can gain this with a third party dongle plugged into the car or just continue to use the cable with the phone.

I'll have to check inside the car to confirm which Smart Connect it is. TBH not likely to use the map service greatly (got a great big Trucker style road atlas in the back) but handy as a backup.

I'll also play around more with settings.

I think you might also have to finalise the account setup with details from the V5 which is probably going to take a week or two to arrive, to get access to all services.

The 9" just has buttons down the left, 8" has two knobs and buttons either side

Carsifi is supposed to work very well, and is quite small so can be tucked away.
I've got the same issue in my Toyota, but I just use the cable.

I've just bought a new Samsung Galaxy A34 to replace my trusty old Motorola G8 Power which worked over cable for Android Auto. The A34 works over cable too, just had to go into settings>location>app permissions>maps and choose allow all the time.

The error message I was getting was "Google Maps needs location access. When its safe, go to location settings on your phone and allow access for Maps"
