Cars be * expensive vs 10 years ago

So, the old runabout has gone to the car dealership in the sky (no fault of my own, I hasten to add! She was parked..)

She was a 10 or 11 years old when I bought her for £2.5k in 2014. During our time together, I averaged less than 3k miles a year, purely for recreational use at the weekends. But even with my low mileage, I couldn't live without a car. It's Cornwall, many places have 1 bus service *per day* (in one direction only, can you believe that?!)

Anyway, the same-model successor to the particular car I had, that is now also ~12 years old - prices start at £6k for 100k mileage examples. You want the same mileage mine had (<70k)? More like £8k.

I'm finding it really, really hard to stomach these price rises. A 3x price rise in < 10 years.

If I wanted to pay the same again as last time (or slightly more, say £3k) it seems I'm looking at 20 year old cars. That's insane. The govt keeps telling us to scrap cars that old..

There is a point to my rambling, and here it is.

What would OcUK buy for my usage? Ideally ~10 years old and not absolutely knackered, or having a billion miles on the clock. Reliability and comfort being king, as I drive elderly people around and they all have hip problems and can't stomach a firm ride. Reliability because I'm not made of money, as you can probably tell :p

Any thoughts appreciated.

I'd pick the Toyota hybrid drivetrain and get an old Auris or Prius. Not remotely fun, but reliable.
Unfortunately it just is the case that people are getting priced out of car ownership. Sometimes the alternative of taking taxis everywhere works out cheaper, do the math for your situation.

I can't be without a car. You can't really exist in Cornwall without one. And we used it for all sorts of things that a Taxi driver would not permit.

Similar issue here, just made a thread about my car. I picked up a legit Ibiza 1.2L 14yrs ago with 3100 miles for £3700. Sold it on about 60k as had a works van.

Japanese, like a Corolla/Auris or a basic Civic.
10-year-old Auris examples are in the region of £7-£8k. I can't stretch that far. Also for some stupid reason the Mk1 has the gearshift up by the bloody rear view mirror :p Must have been smoking the good stuff when they designed that.

Prices can be crazy/depressing - stuff of the same age/mileage as I was looking at 5+ years ago still the same price or higher now... you really have to hunt to find the bargains now.

Dogging, drugs and drive by's? That kind of thing? You'll want a bmw, Audi or range rover really.

Big black pickup surely.

Didn't the old Top Gear program do forensic testing on the seats of second hand cars.I remember the results were surprisingly disgusting. :D

car Has Full Service History From Toyota , Fully Serviced , MOT until March 2024

Buy what I did, an old Volvo V70 D5, the engine is bombproof as is pretty much the rest of the car, it’s got surprisingly good performance and economy, and as my aged and very frail father keeps harping on about, it’s supremely comfortable and has a very nice ride.

Prices are crazy, the dealer I bought mine from has tried to buy it back off me twice for more than I originally paid for it despite putting roughly 20k+ more miles on it.

Interesting. It's almost half the market price (even Facebook thinks so), and has been on offer for 3 weeks without being snapped up. I'll give him a ring, but surely that's "too good to be true" territory.

Up to now I've not been considering private sales as there is no comeback (sold as seen) and I'm not capable of inspecting them for faults.

Why so cheap... all the AutoTrader examples (nationally) are £7k+. Well, worth a call. Ta.

e: Distance also not an issue. I'll take the train, np.
