Upgrading from a 3080 to a 4070/4070TI

I am thinking of getting rid of my 3080 and getting a 4070 or 4070TI purely for the frame generation technology that offers huge performance increases in Microsoft Flight Simulator.

Putting aside frame generation (which not many games support) is this a sensible thing to do ? Will my 3080 outperform a 4070 or 4070TI by a sizeable margin in games that don't support frame generation?

Better to wait for 5 series and then get a 4080 cheaper ?

If it was me I would either wait and get a 5000 series or if I was not happy with frames sell the 3080 and get a 4070 with dlss 3 and frame gen for the same performance as a 3080. The 4070ti is massively overpriced for what it is. I feel like its only the 4070 or 4090 this generation that actually make sense.

You could probably get £350 - £400 for a 3080 so its only a £150ish to get a 4070

The 50 series is not road mapped until 2025.

You could always wait to see if FSR3 brings anything to the table but that was announced 9 months ago and not heard from since.

Why would you want to waste your money like that? Frame generation also doesn't work as well in situations were the input FPS is too low as it adds latency.

If you want better FPS in Microsoft Flight Simulator get the fastest CPU you can afford!

CPU is an i7 12700

MSFS runs fine when high in the sky and when using GA planes.

But put me in Heathrow in the Fenix A320 and FLSTL running and i get about 22 FPS even with terrain LOD down to a pathetic 100.

This is running 3440x1440 btw

It's a sideways move outside of frame generation.

If Flight Simulator is your main hobby and you play it a lot then the £150 it'll cost to upgrade is worth it.
Any other reason, no it wouldn't be worth it

Frame gen works better when your base FPS is higher, so if your only getting 22 with a 3080 then you would only be getting around the same with a 4070 and around 25 with a 4070ti, Frame gen would get to up to 40 but then it'll feel like its running at 10fps and you will probably have a lot of visible artifacting while the cockpit HUD would also look weird and blocky.

The Ryzen 7 7800X3D beats a Core i9 13900K by 35% to 45% in the game:

IIRC,the Ryzen 7 5800X3D did very well in the game too against the Intel CPUs.

I would try and ask on here:
