Something I look at every 6 months to see if they are worth investing in. Every time I look I conclude the ROI is several decades so I walk away.

Anybody got one?

Yes. Exactly my point. I can’t see how the industry will take off without some form of grant / significant price reduction.

Maybe domestic production just isn’t viable?

There are some really smart designs, but few look easy to retrofit without significant investment. Doubt you'd ever get a decent ROI.

I'm sure I have seen, that there are units that are being tested that can go in to chimney type openings and also ridge mounted so they don't protrude to far above the roofline

That's what i'd imagine the solution could be. The size of an office desk fan and you have multiples of them along your ridge tiles. Each of them generating a small amount to deliver a large amount over all.

Yes, those were the ones I noted a while back.
Somethings like these:

although the ones I saw were even more hidden than those.

English councils are still crazily restrictive on those. Really almost any house with a chimney should be good for those (and chimney are going the way of the dodo soon), but only fully detached on large sites have a chance with the current rules.

you wouldn't want a 6kw on the home anyway
probably 1kw max, bearing in mind they can operate 24/7
They wont, but they can

If you have batteries then even a 1kw turbine could generate 24kw a day which would pretty much make you self sufficient upto daily usage of 24.

I still think the technology isn't really there for home use yet and planning is a pain

Nothing attached to a house is going to produce any meaningful amounts of power due to turbulence around the building itself. Remember those Windsave things you could get from B&Q etc , cost more to run the electronics than was ever produced.
I've had Solar PV and Solar Hot Water here for 12+ years and if a turbine was feasible I'd certainly have one, I have the land and the necessary open aspect of several hundred yards into the prevailing winds but there's another property situated within the guidelines exclusion zone so it's a no go for me :(

250w is all i'd want right now. That should take care of the "background noise".

I think crowdfunded and built on non residential land would be better. Think ripple energy but for local communities.

i think noise would also be an issues in residential settings. There has to be some moving parts in small scale wind generatrion so the amount of compalint would be quite high
