So people, the mrs is getting a full electric vehicle (for the time being anyway) - Been doing some checking and best thing is change the tariff to a EV type which allows cheaper charging at night. Has anyone done this and any recommendations plz

Thanks

So it depends on your car or car charger.... if one or both is supported Intelligent octopus is hard to beat, 7.5p per kwh for 6hrs off peak (11:30pm-5:30am) and then a so so price for the rest of the day. its for the whole house as well so can benefit if you push your tumble dryer, dishwasher or immersion heater and what not to those times. Add to that you can also get extra bonus cheap slots if you car needs them to charge.

even more bonus if you have a house battery.

if your car or charge point are not supported then you are looking at octopus Go... which is 9.5p per kwh off peak for 4 hrs(12:30-4:30am) and no extra bonus times.

as said above, make sure you get a referral off someone as you will get £50 credit on your account, as will the fortunate person who referred you.

Whole energy would work out cheaper for me than go because I have a slow charging car, it does have higher peak rate than go only by a bit.

Whole energy
wow that is not bad then... their website only states car charging but it could be an over sight.

however with their export at 16p per kwh that is a very tempting tarif. I think i will switch to IO for this winter but next spring i may check that out myself.

I am not that bothered about a slight increase in peak price as i have a house battery, but that export in summer should more than make up for any dips into peak power in the winter.

Maybe I am wrong, I only had a brief discussion, I am still in a lock on a cheap tariff so don't use any EV tariff yet as I don't do enough miles to benefit and mostly charge for free at work but we should have another EV soon which won't have such luxuries.

for me it looks like eon next is:
33.61p 07:00 - 00:00, 9.5p 00:00 - 07:00 & 43.66p standing
Intelligent Octopus is:
31.03p 05:30 - 23:30, 7.5p 23:30 - 05:30 & 42.01p standing

The dynamic charging thing on octopus is a bit of a pain if you have solar & battery though as it sends you a charging schedule when you plug in and may charge during the day which pulls from the battery when the solars not covering it...

16p export would be nice but not sure I export enough for that to offset the extra overnight.

Intelligent octopus is not compatible with my zappi or car so its a no go'er for me.
Octopus Go is the alternative. If you have a proper charger (you do) then it should be fine; 4 hrs between 0030 and 0430.

Depend on your mileage. If you do more than 8000 miles a year and solely charge at home then you are probably better off going on Octopus tracker as it’s average is 16p/kWh so you are not taking a hard shafting on your home electric.

If you do more than 8000 miles a year then you might be cheaper on an EV tariff

If you do less then Driffield do not go on an EV tariff.

We are doing around 9000 mile a year atm. We are still on tracker…and it works out cheaper as tracker still cos the house use

Yup, can't put enough miles in my car in that window, it's too small for my slow charging car, hence looking at other options.

Ah slow charging car, shame. I have granny charger and a fast charging car and I'm noticing it's quite hard work - the car hasn't been 100% for a month or two now.

I only paid 100 quid for gas and elec the last month tho, so no complaints!

I am currently on Octopus Go, I had some issue with my Ohme account and linking to intelligent Octopus, so had to start with Go. So far i find I charge 2-3 times a week (8-12 hours) for 60 to 80kw of charge at a cost of £8.50 max. Obviously once I can I'll move to intelligent so I only have to charge twice a week and cost around £6.70. Many other tariffs seem to be higher during peak hours compared to Octopus.

Have a look at the trackers too. We used to be on intelligent octopus, but it wasn't actually cheaper unless you did a lot of ev miles. We are now on the 30min tracker which still gets very cheap night prices most days (anywhere between -2p and 10p), and then peak times are 30ish p, and non peak day is 15-25p. The day rate on intelligent was too high unless your car usage was a lot higher than the house

The other issue with intelligent for us (and the reason I started researching what to switch to) is it occasionally screws up. We had it 3 times in around 1 year period… where it didn't charge the car overnight when it should have. Which was very frustrating one of those times! Your milage might vary as I don't know if it's the cars fault or their smart system - we have a supported car though (full electric mini) - so no excuses!

I've found that Audi tend to work on their api Friday evenings. If that's down, Intelligent won't work. I've left my day to day Intelligent setup so I'm reliant on Chinese cloud services being up and running rather than German / British ones, as they're a lot more reliable.
