Which 4090 - leaning towards the Ventus

I did downlock a bit to make it stable in all games. Ultimately have got;

Undervolt mode + Overclock: 70% Max power for stock performance exactly.
Maxed mode: Max everything for +6fps.

That's based primarily on Control 4K Native, max RT settings. It clocks to 3075 constantly stable. It can go to 3.1ghz but that isn't stable in some games. Ultimately its +250 +1200 I've found the best.

What's your power draw at the moment then?. I haven't undervolted before.

When I set the power limit to 90. I can get 1400 on memory and 150+ on core so pings between 2900 to 2950. I will see if it's stable over the coming days as I attempt to reduce the coil whine.

I'm not sure to be honest, it varies with game. At 100% work load I think its around 300-350.. certainly no more than 400w. Look how tight a fit lol.

Yeah, in cyberpunk I am at about 395w. I'll have to look into undervolting.

You really weren't kidding about how close of a call that was! But hey.. can't get better cooling then that!.

Oh yeah, what you running CPU/ram and mobo wise?.

The front of the case is a natural anti sag bracket lol. MSI Carbon x670 and Kingston Fury Renogade DDR 6200mhz.

That's the case I want, looks like a tight fit, or is it just the picture. Want to make sure the card will fit
It will 100% fit but be under no illusion you have to be very careful lol. There are quite a few builds with the Strix in it. I think length wise Strix is the longest.

It's giving me the upgrade itch case wise by looking at that

I have to admit the 7800x3d and the 4090 are the perfect combo. The CPU barely used any power at all, especially with a -20 co.

I have my 7600x at 65 tdp and it boosts to 5.4 ghz. Love it. I'm waiting till next year to get a 8700x/8800x.

I've been playing Planescape torment while I've been without a proper GPU. Only problem now is I'm well into it... so playing a 35w game with a 4090. Baldur's Gate III will have to wait!

Maxing out these cards for just 6 fps sounds awful, i think when i get mine i will undervolt it for stock performance. How much cooler does the card run when undervolted?

Yeh an extra 150w and loads of heat compared to 70% pl for a few fps is not my cup of tea, but its nice to have the options

Yeah i rather have less heat, less fan noise for the same performance tbh especially during summer. Think im set on a FE model, always wanted a FE! No better time than now.

Undervolt + overclocking always the best way. Not sure the specifics as I'm at work but reducing power by 30% helps thermals across the board. PC is pretty much silent.

Figured i wont be watercooling mine for the first time ever so silence is paramount.

If it's quiet get an FE mate. But if its inaudible you want MSI (Trio or Suprim) or Asus (TUF or Strix). Coil whine is a lottery as always but at least you can guarantee the fan noise. Worse case scenario you get a unit with moderate coul whine, but in loads of workloads complete silence.

I don't suppose you have any guides you can recommend?. It does seem a little daunting and by the sound of it.. time consuming

I haven't but download MSI afterburner and I'm sure there's plenty of guides on YouTube. You can't go wrong but if you change the power limit to 70% and put memory to +1000 and clock speed to +150. All cards should be capable of that and it will reduce the power draw massively and give you around or just under stock performance.

If you want to go further: If that is stable, keep increasing values until it isn't and revert back to what was stable.

Well, I did some playing around by undervolting to 900mv at 2600mhz and 1200+ on ram and there was a minor downgrade in performance, however the drop in power usage is jaw dropping.

I also have a profile for 975ml with basically stock clocks and memory at 1000+

I won't proclaim they are 100 percent stable as more time would be required.

Oh yeah, did you use the mod to unlock the frame rates in elden ring? Or did you simply leave it at 60?.

Well, it seems like the card will be going back. While the coil whine has reduced a bit.. no where near enough.. I can still hear it from the sofa.

I was gonna risk getting sent a replacement but soon changed my mind.. as I don't wanna play the lottery for getting a Strix card without whine.

Offer is back and it's better. It now takes 20% off the price you pay straight away instead of getting paid 20% back on your credit account a month later.
