Best card for 1440p - worth going 4080/7900xtx?

Close to finishing my spec for my new upgrade, I’ll be pairing my GPU with a 7800x3d CPU.

I game on a 144hz 1440p monitor. Ive been trying to squeeze in a 7900xtx or 4080 into my build (around £2k max).

But it got me wondering, how much does it matter at 1440p?

Is there a point where no matter what card you use, you won’t really get much performance boost?

For example, if I go with a 4080/7900xtx would I even get an increase over a 4070 at 1440p?

I have no plans to go 4k and would like this machine to last around 4~years.

You don’t really need such a powerful card for 1440p. Find a second hand 3090 or go for something like a 7800 or 7900. Even a 3080 or 6x00 AMD card at around £400-£500 will smash most games into dust at 1440p.

Depends on the game and the settings, but I wouldn't consider a 4080/7900 XTX a waste. Games are only getting more demanding over time.

Personally, my step down wouldn't be a 4070, but a 7900 XT, even though the Pulse has gone up to £740 now.

I am running a 4070 and its excellent at 1440p, It plays fps shooters without breaking a sweat, my games are PUBG, Hell let loose, world of tanks/warships, Farcry 6 and No Mans Sky all over 100fps at high to ultra settings with my rig

Its also very power efficient and undervolts well for lower temps and more fps....tbh I lock all my games at 130fps to save power/heat

Im running a 7900XTX/7800X3D with a 1440/144hz monitor and I think its a great combo. Yes the GPU is probably a bit overkill but like Tetras said newer games are getting more demanding and the extra VRAM definitely helps.

I've got a 6950XT and even that seems like a bit of overkill at 1400p. That said I've never heard any complaints about having too much GPU power, you can always cap the framerate.

Gaming for 4+ years is likely to exceed 12GB VRAM. Buy once, cry once.

Best bang per buck at the high end is the 7900XT, if you want to spend extra then an XTX or RTX 4080 will give a little extra.

Yes you can have a great time with less, but high end CPU and monitor deserves some love.

I'd take. 7700X with 7900XT over a 7800X 3D with RTX4070 if budget was a constraint.

I have a 4080 for running at 1440p, because personally I like the idea of some headroom in my GPU given the requirements of games in the future will always be higher. In my mind at least it futureproofs the purchase. Plus is amuses me when some games don't even make the fans spin up on the card, just proves how good the FE cooler is.

Interesting, likely to last a few years at 1440p decent settings you think?

In many games yes, however the 10GB if VRAM could quickly become an issue for high / ultra settings in new games and when you hit a VRAM wall, it's a wall not a 'slow down'.
There are already games fail miserably with 8GB and high settings or just miss out textures.

If you wanted to go with a 3080, then either the 12GB or the Ti which is 12GB are worth paying a little extra for.

Apparently the RX7700XT/RX7800XT will be announced on Friday. Might be worth a wait to see how it looks.
Urgh FFS, I’m trying to get something sorted in time for Starfield :(

Where would they sit on the scale, just below the 7900XT I’m guessing?

Although I hope they price it OK. Navi 32 has been pushed upto the RX7800XT(Navi 22 was the RX6700XT).

Yeah exactly, which means it’s likely to be extremely underwhelming unfortunately. But I thought as it’s this close I may as well wait and just hope we’re pleasantly surprised!

7800XT has 60 compute units vs 84 in the 7900XT so unless there is some miracle like it's a monolithic die which solves RDNA 3's performance gap it's likely to trade blows with the 6800XT / RTX 4070.

The 7900XT has Starfield Premium for free.... surely that's enough to justify a purchase via man maths :D
