3700X + 3070, where to go from here?

Hi all, I currently have an itch to upgrade my system. I only really use it to play Warzone so the best bang for buck performance increases there would be nice.

It feels like my 3700X is probably at its limits with the 3070, so I was looking at a 13700K DDR5 bundle, but soon hit £800+, so I'm not sure if thats the best use of cash? Would like to go back to Intel and Asus mobo. Is it worth going 13th gen? Should I wait for 14th? Or is 11th/12th gen and reusing my DDR4 still going to be a decent upgrade? Any thoughts appreciated, current specs below:

5800X3D is the best value for money CPU upgrade.

If you definitely want Intel, then maybe something like this:

11th gen: definitely not, higher power consumption and gaming performance otherwise comparable to 10th gen. I'd consider 11th gen a downgrade to Zen 3.
12th gen: is usually beaten by 13th gen (at least, the 'true' 13th gen CPUs which are 13600K and up). I'd consider this a sidegrade really (from the Zen 3 options you already have).
14th gen: the i7-14700 looks interesting because it supposedly gets more E-cores, but they appear to just be a refresh of 13th gen with higher clocks.

Great, just updated to F52i, will get the 5800X3D ordered :)

Is the upgrade to 32GB RAM going to help get more frames?

One thing I've started to increasingly notice is that modern games are using over 16gb of RAM, while you might not get more flat out frames in cases where you need more RAM you'll certainly enjoy a much smoother experience.

I was hitting 20GB of system ram usage playing Jedi Survivor. The days of 16GB being enough are coming to a close, if they’re not here already.
 
I agree on upgrading to a 5800X3D and getting more RAM for a cheap yet very impactful upgrade. I went from a 3600nonx and 16GB RAM to 5800X3D and 32GB has given me as huge uplift in performance

You'll be happy, i've seen upto 40% improvement in some games on average FPS and the lows. Dont forget to update the bios for your motherboard before you install the new CPU and also, if it doesnt boot after the CPU switch and once goes into the bios, you might need to turn the boot options from UEFI to UEFI and Legacy... spent 3 hours... trying to "fault find" why it knew my drives were there but wouldnt boot to them.

Thanks for the tip! I remember when I installed my M.2 SSD, the motherboard wasn't a big fan of booting from it for some reason so I had to leave my OS on my older SATA SSD. Not a big problem but shows things can be awkward sometimes! Motherboard bios is updated to the latest version now :)

Some motherboards will disable or limit some SATA ports or lanes if other devices are connected. Your motherboard manual will tell you more.

sort of similar here, ryzen 9 3900x and a 2080 super, not sure if should go best am4 chip or keep saving to near end of year and go for a full upgrade

2080 Super is still a very good card for high refresh 1080p and 1440p with a few tweaks. Go 5800X3D and sit tight for 12-18 months IMO. You'll likely see much better lows and more consistent performance. Could also go 32GB 3600MHz if you haven't already.
 
From what I’ve read about 16 vs 32 gb RAM it’s usually not much of a difference in FPS. Unless you have money burning a hole in your pocket.

It looks like the 5800X3D is available for £268, and I could sell my 3700X on to recoup some of that back to give an upgrade cost of around £200 which looks really good value, so I'll probably give that a go!

I got a dual channel 32gb kit of 3600mhz DDR4 for £53, and should hopefully get around £30 for the 16gb kit I have so for ~£25 delta I thought I'd rather have it than not :)
