Nvidia announces DLSS 3.5, with AI-enhanced Ray-Tracing available on all RTX GPUs.

To be honest, this has zero reason to be part of DLSS as technically, it's completely independent of upscaling.
It's part of the same pipeline i.e. where it does the upscaling. They were asked if it could turn into a DLAA-type situation, but nothing is confirmed.

My understanding is that it fixes the issues DLSS 2 has when upscaling ray traced scenes... Fixes the shimmer or ghosting of rays caused by the way DLSS 2 upscales
Should just be part of DLSS 2 but I'm guessing it took a lot of work to get the ray traced scenes upscaling properly so they've decided to call it a new feature

I could be wrong though...

Not sure I'd consider this as "increasing image quality" any more than upscaling does, really. Depends on where you're coming from but it's basically just fake rays instead of fake frames or fake pixels. However you want to think of it.

That said I also totally called this feature as a possibility, thank you very much.

some kind of DLRT where it fakes/enhances the number of rays being cast...

Edit: ok I guess I got a little excited. I see that it does a bit more in terms of replacing a denoiser and compressing some steps etc. I still stand by the idea that if you wanted to get similar IQ with current techniques it'd cost you a bunch of performance though.

Ah, when I said that brute-force RT will never work long-term*, I expect something clever to reduce the work or even more dedicated hardware offload some of (think of the difference T&L made back in the day), I was not thinking of this kind of thing.

Instead of better hardware or a rendering staging which culls unneeded things, we get... Well more proprietary upscaling / re-construction stuff. Still it looks like Nvidia have yet again hijacked Cyberpunk for their PR purposes. You'd think a game with a budget in the $100s millions wouldn't be that easy to subvert into a tech demo, but what do I know?

* The power required for brute-force compared to what is state-of-the-art now probably requires a transistor leap similar as from 28nm to 3nm - and that took 10-13 years before nodes slowed down as they have recently.

RT is one area dedicating a large area of fixed function implementation can be an advantage and/or can be somewhat farmed out to a dedicated chip(s) towards brute forcing it but I can't see either AMD or nVidia going down that route until content widely adopts the feature.

AMD has a hell lot of catching up to to, slightly inferior upscaling no frame generation just yet, way slower in ray tracing and now nvidia now has the ability to drastically improve existing ray tracing quality.
Yeah, AMD are normally always playing catch-up with Nvidia always releasing newer tech.

No doubt after they launch FSR 3.0 they will shortly announce their own version of ray reconstruction and also Intel too.

Fake frame, fake pixels, fake rays. Too much of a fixation, guys, when rasterization is fakery in itself. And that fakery becomes more and more expensive to run...

I blame women

Women started this trend when fake breasts became a thing in the 1980s

We've been on a downward spiral ever since with more and more fakes. Even my car makes fake noises when I drive it

The fakery is technically less expensive to run. We need the fakery to run the poorly optimised fakery that the game studio created.
