I just had to share this with you all – I recently bought a massive 57" G9 Neo monitor, and it's arriving today. I thought my trusty 4090 graphics card could handle it like a champ, but turns out it can only get me 120Hz because of its DisplayPort 1.4. Pretty disappointing, right? So, I went ahead and ordered a 7600 graphics card to make the most out of the monitor's 240Hz native refresh rate.

Here's the kicker, though: when I use both cards, they'll each run at 8x speed because of PCI lanes. I considered going all out with a 7900XTX, but the resale value just didn't add up, and I'd end up losing money.

So, a big shoutout to those who helped me figure this out, but I also have to say I'm a bit frustrated with Nvidia. This experience has convinced me to switch sides – no more Team Green for me.

I thought due to DSC/compression it was possible for >144fps at 4K with a 4090 even though it’s DP 1.4? Surely there would have been an outcry if this wasn’t the case?

I just read several Reddit posts where fellow 4090 users are saying, "Well, I'll just get the 5090." This situation seems absurd. I don't blame Samsung; they shouldn't have to delay monitor development for Nvidia. It's quite annoying. Hopefully, I can use my 4090 for the heavy lifting but output it via the 7600. If anyone knows if this will work, please inform me.

I'll keep everyone updated. Later, I'll create a YouTube video to express my frustration and share my experience to prevent others from making the same mistake.

Personally, I would take the hit and just go for the 7900XTX rather than faffing around with dual cards.

Edit: Wait, but it supports HDMI 2.1 though right? Have you tried that?

I don't get the screen until later today - others on reddit reported the hdmi 2.1 is limited and doesnt run the 240hz ( iirc it was 144hz or 120hz over the hdmi )

First result on Google.

Afraid to say "do more research" would have avoided your disappointment.

It's lame that Nvidia scrimped on the spec, but the details were there to read.
I totally agree with you. You'd expect that having the latest gear would cover all your needs, but sometimes it doesn't work out that way. It's like Nvidia's version of APPLE avoiding USB-C, I guess. Leather jacket dude can shove it DP 1.4 where the sun don't shine

I normally can never afford this tech - I am getting it partly paid and will use it for work also - So it's kind a big time bummer. Doubt i'll EVER get to spend this much on tech ever, ever again.

Apple avoided USBC so it could sell more accessories and it's proprietary cables.

Nvidia scrimped on DP 2.1 probably because they thought the vast majority of 40x0 uses cases would be up to 4k with higher refreshes.

Your monitor is the edgiest of edge cases with both it's refresh and resolution.

You know what, I'm pretty sure Nvidia had all the info well ahead of time about the top-tier monitors out there. These monitors should definitely be supported by graphics cards that cost nearly 2k. Even the 7600, which is just a £250 card, can handle this standard. They could have gone for a tiered approach, which I'm not a fan of either, but maybe the 4090s only have DP 2.1. Well, live and learn, I guess.

You have to be so careful when buying now, especially with audio and screens. And high end products in my experience are often not as good as you might imagine.

The 4090 is probably still your best bet for running that monitor. Yea, sucks that you can't get the higher refresh rate, but it's not like there's anything else that can hit that resolution at a respectable frame rate.

Yes one of the reasons I also avoided the 4090 as I wanted one of these 57" monitors too to add to my 49", other reasons no NVLINK and the fire hazard power connector added to it being totally an avoid GPU. Nvidia... planned obsolescence at work again. There was zero reason to not add DP 2.1 and the standard was available and passed a long time ago, just Nvidia being Nvidia and making sure people that buy such cards will have to update again to use their new monitor to the full.

They will probably do as they did before and add a firmware update to the GPUS to make them compatible to DP 2.0/2.1 but won't actually allow full bandwidth of the true DP 2.1 just a way to make sure it gets recognised by new monitors and not trip up motherboards to display a graphics/vga error. They have done such updates before.

As you will see here :-

and

But they are nothing more than a fix so don't expect them to have an update tool for DP 1.4 to 2.1 full specs, just a comparability fix maybe to stop errors being thrown up but no real DP 2.1 specs.
