So I’m currently having my hallway and landing replastered and I’m looking to paint the walls in F&B Ammonite and the bannister/spindles in F&B Wevet.

I’m looking at using an eggshell paint for the bannister/spindles, but wondered how people tackle the skirting and architraves.

Do you paint these with the same paint as the bannister/spindles or do you use a satin wood?

If you use satin wood for the skirting and architrave, would you use the same colour as the bannister/spindles? - I don’t imagine eggshell would be too good on the skirting.

If you use different paint for the skirting, where do you swap paints? On the wall side of the stairs the skirting meets the staircase and goes up with the stairs.

Thanks.

I had ammonite mixed up in Valspar. I then had the wood and metal version made up with the same colour code. It is a near bang on match.

Good idea. Thanks.

My bannister I'm tempted to leave wood and stain it, but paint the spindles etc.

Yeah ours is kinda like that currently.

I have sanded away the varnish so the bannister/handrail is bare wood (Pine) (I was originally going to stain oil it) and the spindles are already primed with Zinsser BIN to get them back to white ready to paint.

I may still oil the bannister, but an eggshell finish also looks good. I wouldn’t use a satin or gloss on the bannister though.

Looking to get this done ASAP so we can order some new carpet for the stairs and landing.

Our bathroom was finished a couple of week ago as well. We went with a design similar to what you had/have planned so I’ll post a thread soon with pictures.

Yes please! Sounds great.

Edit: coincidentally my OneDrive just did a throw back to a year ago when I started thinking about the bathroom

Thanks.

I think I’m going to do the same.

Have you done your ceiling in the same colour?
Ceiling same colour but estate emulsion. Looks really Matte and lovely.

Yeah sorry my spindles, stringers, risers are eggshell wevet, the bannister and treads are stained.

For what it’s worth, I probably wouldn’t use F&B estate emulsion on walls again. It scuffs so easily and you can’t really do much to touch it up. On ceilings it’s fine because you never touch them.

The eggshell holds up well I can’t complain about it at all.

Thanks for the tips. :)

Went with:

- Valspar trade paint matt colour matched to F&B Ammonite for the walls

- F&B Wevet - Estate Eggshell for the woodwork

- F&B Wevet - Estate Emulsion for the ceiling

F&B now do a range called dead flat fyi, which is a tougher washable matt. Can go on wood and radiators. Very expensive but very good.

Interesting. Tbh though, since our initial dabble in F&B I’ve used Valspar Premium for my bathroom and kitchen walls, and it looks great as well. So not sure I’ll pay the premium for F&B again.

Sounds good. Is it very flat / matt?
Yeah it’s nice, not as flat as the estate emulsion, but then I used their Valspar premium kitchen/bathroom paint not just the normal walls one which I expect would be even matter.
They do a new range that is a direct competitor to F&B with all the similar marketing. It's main feature is being crazy Matt.

Ok, I require some more OcUK advice.

This is a picture of our hallway …

( This is a work in progress. Still got other walls to prep and the stairs and banister to rub down and wood fill. )

I’m going to add dado rail panelling to the bottom half of the wall under the dado rail.

Should I …
- Paint the the panelling (below dado) white / wevet.
- Paint above the dado, the picture rail and above the picture rail (excluding the textured centre of ceiling ) ammonite.
- Paint the textured centre ceiling white / Wevet.

Or…
- Paint the whole wall below the picture rail (including panelling) in ammonite.
- Paint the picture rail, above the picture rail and the centre ceiling white / wevet.

I think if I just painted the upper wall (above the dado) in ammonite then the hallway would look like a big stripe.

Opinions?

Thanks
