I am looking to upgrade my near 7 year old PC with something new now that Starfield is out, I have put the following together as I intend to upgrade the PC and keep using my 1080ti until later in the year when I will pick-up a new graphics card so I want to ensure I can cover a broad range of GPUs in the spec. Looking for a mini-ATX build to get a bit more space back on my desk.

Any thoughts are appreciated, if it helps I game at 1440p on an ultrawide monitor so I dont expect to be going 4090, will probably go the way of AMD and a 7900XT or the like. Very unsure on the PSU and not sure if the chosen motherboard and CPU might be overkill? I wouldnt want to go any higher than the cost as it is but if it can be reduced to nearer £1000 that would be helpful.

My current understanding of Starfield right now is that it’s poorly optimised and it doesn’t perform well with AMD.

How comfortable are you with overclocking RAM? Buildzoid has said to get a kit of TeamGroup T-Create Classic 10L DDR5 32GB Kit (2 x 16GB) 5600MHz (PC5-44800) product code CTCCD532G5600HC46DC01 as it uses excellent Hynix memory modules and can be overclocked fairly easily.

Consider a 13th gen Intel build too.

I’d also consider getting a new PSU and GPU first and seeing how that performs with your current system before throwing it all out and buying a new rig, especially if you’re playing at 1440P or higher.

Preference would be to not, but i have overclocked in the past so it is a valid option. I would be happy with intel, what would I be looking at for comparable performance on the intel side?

Current PC is an intel i5-6600K and its feeling its age, not sure myself if that would be sufficent to show enough of a boost with a new GPU only?

Hi.

I know you want to get the budget down closer to £1000 (and it is possible if you sub in a couple components and use your current chassis) but realistically you’re trying to run a brand new unoptimised game so more specs is more better until they patch the game.

13600KF + B760 DDR5 motherboard + a 6800XT or 4070 or used 3080 ti would be good.

You want as much VRAM as possible- 8gig VRAM GPUs are not enough and I’d try get a 12gig VRAM GPU but do NOT consider a 3060 16gig card.

I created an Intel build there but the board was DDR4 and I can’t see any DDR5 micro ATX boards on the OC site.

Thanks for the help, it would be nice to always save some money if its possible though I am happy with the cost, was more a question if there was anything obvious I could drop down that I hadn't considered such as the drive that mickyflinn pointed out.

Will check out some benches between intel and AMD and take a look at the alternative option, one other question is I notice the case says a max length of PSU of 150mm while the one I have chosen is 160mm in length, cant seem to find any that are below 150mm in length? Is there a confusion between width and length or do I need to have another look?

You’ll need to look at the user manual for both items to make that determination.

I could say going for a cheap SSD would be less of a problem long term as it doesn’t really hurt reliability but going for a cut price PSU can be very risky with modern GPUs given the transient spikes in power draw.

I do really like the SN850X at the current pricing and own a 2tb SN850X myself. It’s really really fast and very well priced with worse SSDs not that much cheaper.

An ok but working cooler now would be fine since you can always under volt a CPU but going for say a 13400F over a 13600KF instead of just getting other components at a cheaper price would be a noticeable drop in relative performance.

I still think that if I was to build a modern rig, I would personally get a 13700F and an ok DDR5 motherboard, a 6800XT GPU on the cheap and that RAM that I suggested at £90.

If you can afford an upgrade now and replace more items later, get the GPU and PSU first as I suggested.

Games need more GPU these days than CPU.

The pre-ATX 3.0 Seasonic GX PSUs were fairly compact.
