The Manchester United Club Thread **Sponsored by Comedy Central**

How in all that is holy do the club not do due diligence before they spend vast sums of money on a player. A quick "does this person have any history of really bad behaviour or have there been any allegations against them". They know that United and its players are held to far higher standards and scrutiny than any other club. This could be £100m down the drain to go with the loss from Greenwood.

Astonishing.

"Can we get away with it?"

You don't play a game of "can we get away with it" when buying a young player with potential for close to £100m. You play that game if you are getting a bargain or you are buying a ready made star. Its just shocking ineptitude.

I‘m sure in Fergie book the first one (which was good) he said that they’d do all the back ground checks on the family/friends etc see what they’re like. Surely they didn’t stop doing all that once he left? Mean, its looking like with him doing everything once he retired, not a single person at the club knew what to do regarding, well anything really.

Three horrendous players/coaches coming out of the wood work in a couple of years is not a good look. At all. The club itself/owners/directors - whoever have handled every single one of them about as bad as they could have.

It’s not just about money, it’s just doing the right thing.

Greenwood - should have been sacked as soon as those recordings/photos where confirmed as him.

That coach award, I don’t even know how you can possibly spin that PR. Like, I can’t even fathom how that happens? How does no one in the building not remember what he’s done. ******* mind blowing.

Now you’ve got Antony, he should have been suspended as soon as these cases progressed and almost instantly after the Brazilian FA suspended him. Even more bizarre having radio silence! I‘d bet it’s a simple as ‘we‘ve spent £70m on this guy, he needs to play. If we don’t say anything maybe no one will know outside of brazil’.

It is understandable though, must be a bloody hard pill to swallow, going from yeh we’ve lost a fortune on this players as he’s hopeless to we’ve actually lost the entire amount.

So, say you are accused of a misdemeanour at a work do where you've had a few too many. Would you expect to be summarily dismissed or for a full and thorough investigation to be undertaken? Real life isn't quite as simple as you'd like it to be. The club acted correctly in suspending Greenwood. Where they can be criticised is the delay in reaching a decision on his future and the communication **** up. Antony has been accused of something, it might be a money grabbing attempt by a jilted lover, it might be he's a wrong un and wacked his ex gf. It's up to the police to investigate and decide if he should be charged. If the club is to be consistent then it would wait until a formal legal proceeding was undertaken against Antony before suspending him, the same as they did with Greenwood.

Clearly it's not a good look for Manchester United and but these situations are complex and shouldn't be dictated by the baying mob who demand retribution against an accused. And before you accuse me of defending rapists, perpetrators of domestic violence - I'm not. I'm merely saying that we should follow legal process.

FWIW I don't like the look of Antony, he's kinda shiftybut that's not enough to hang him just yet

I agree with what you’re saying however, legally speaking Greenwood hasn’t been charged or found guilty of anything. So if we purely look at it from that POV he’s good to go.

Totally different though working for a normal company you’d very likely keep the job. Nothing else said as you aren’t in the public eye.

We know that football clubs aren’t normal businesses and while they are indeed businesses they’re still core community entities and I think it’s safe to say that footballers are role models and hero’s to a lot of kids, are massively in the public eye and should be held to high standards.

You don't need to commit a criminal offence to be dismissed by your employer. I'd argue that most employers would have started disciplinary proceedings if such an allegation and accompanying video evidence was presented to them. And I think very likely that dismissal would be the result for most "normal" jobs, unless you were able to present a particularly convincing defence.

If anything, the fact he was a footballer and in a position to afford an expensive lawyer, likely meant it was harder to just dismiss him without the risk of it being challenged by him in court.

Of course, if he'd been found guilty in court, then it would have made things even more black and white.

Greenwood was charged.

Absolutely.

Quite remarkable how a few posters here seem to think this shouldn't apply to the Rubiales situation. Compare that to Greenwood & Antony its quite a gulf in severity.

Very Hypocritical.

Not at all, everything in the Rubiales case happened in public. He literally sexually assaulted her with millions of people watching. Completely different situation.

Nah its the intent that should be investigated instead we had exactly what has been criticised in this thread, a baying mob demanding retribution. Hypocritical.
