My old 2nd hand r9 290 is finally dying. I'm a bit out of the loop graphics card wise as I mainly game on consoles. Would a cheap Intel a380 graphics card work OK on an old i7 2600k Intel system or would it need a more modern board to perform.

What motherboard is it? I remember Sandy Bridge era being at the point where we transitioned from BIOS to UEFI, and newer GPUs usually only work with UEFI only boards. Had to update my old Z68 to the beta UEFI (Gigabyte never released a stable version for it) to get a GPU to properly work.

Another thing to consider is Intel GPUs don't perform well in older games (eg DX11/OpenGL).

What's the main use for the PC? If you're mainly playing on consoles and only do basic work, you could get away with the IGP on the 2600K.

hi have you considered used ? if so i would pick up a 6600 for around 120 or a 1660ti/2060 and call it a day

Yes used is probably my best bet at the minute - I've been looking on the bay and you can buy a 5700xt for around £170 now which would be overkill in a nice way .

I don't know if this applies to the A380 in the same way, but generally speaking: Arc GPUs perform very poorly indeed without rebar enabled and I doubt this PC supports rebar.

I wouldn't buy a used 5700 XT for £170 when you can get a brand new 6600 with warranty for a little bit more.

I've had a bit of a rethink and I'm going to try and fix my r9 290.

It's basically running hot and cuts out (gpu and vrms) so I'm going to buy some vrm cooling pads and thermal paste.

My first job will be to remove the old accelloro cooler I have attached to the 290, remove and reapply paste and then remove the current vrm cooling pads and replace them.

It will only cost around £10 to try this which would be better than splashing out on a new card if it works.

The Alpenfon VRM pads worked just fine when I put an Accellero Xtreme on my 290 way back when.

FYI, I’m running W10 on a 2500K/ASUS P8P67 MB combo with a Vega 56 and it’s working nicely.

If that does not work out, may be you could try getting a 2nd hand RX 580 8GB (which is around 10% faster than the 290x, and runs a lot cooler as well). Think they go for around £60 on average on the well-known auction site.

That's a good call also sometimes 590s go cheap too

I picked up a Vega64 for £70 on the MM - I believe there’s a Vega 56 on there now asking for same - I’d offer £55 which is fair and will be a good upgrade :)

Phase 1 of operation fix my old rig is complete I've ordered some mx6 thermal paste and a bunch of thermal pads to help the vrm's out. Whilst I'm at it I'm going to reapply the paste on my cpu.
