I'm not too familiar with cars and looking to purchase a used car. What are your thoughts on this one please? Also, the cambelt was changed in 2016 around 39k miles so am I right in thinking that would need doing soon? How much should I budget for that?

Should be done every 5 years on these I believe so unless it was done in 2021 as well then it's overdue.
Around £500 at a main dealer for most "normal" cam belts, a bit cheaper at an independent.

Yeah cam belt is every 5 years on this engine, it’s a bit over £500 with the water pump, maybes less at an indy. I had a polo with this engine for about four years, in that time it needed a cam belt, egr valve & lambda sensor. so nothing huge but it was only a few years old and on 50 odd thousand miles when i got rid. Admitedley a sample of one isn’t much to go on so you mileage might vary.

I had a mk6 golf but it was a GTI, loved that car, still miss it now :(

How come you decide to get rid of it?

Do you really need a diesel? What’s your usage and expected annual mileage?

Also that won’t be ULEZ compliant only being Euro 5 if that’s important or a possibility.

At least 76 miles a week for work. There’s already a petrol car in the household (Swift) so aiming to get something that would compliment it. Annual mileage at least 5k.

Yeah, the ULEZ is the main negative I think.

5k annually in a diesel is a very silly thing to do, especially a modern one although I'm unsure if that engine uses a DPF and requires a regen or not.

With that mileage, you're gaining all the negatives of a diesel for the sake of saving maybe £10-15/month in fuel, seems like a terrible idea!

From what sort of mileage is it worth considering a modern diesel?

I used to do 200 miles a week and still drove a petrol just for comparison. I would say 100 miles a week is not Diesel territory. You'll save such a tiny amount in fuel but have all the risk and cons of owning a Diesel as people said above. You could have an injector go or DMF or DPF. A petrol would probably command a lower price outright and be less risk for an older car.

Do you have a drive to park on? Have you considered an older EV - at 76 miles a week, even something like a 22kw Zoe or Leaf would only need to charge once a week even in winter, would be ULEZ compliant, take short journeys far better than a diesel (or petrol) which would barely get up to temperature, and on a decent EV tariff cost you £10-15/month in electric.

From a quick search on AT, you'll also get a newer, lower mileage car for similar money to the Golf you linked above.

You already have the petrol Swift for longer journeys, so assuming somewhere to charge, this seems the ideal scenario for a cheap EV as a purely commute car.

I thought it was nearer 20,000 when you consider the price of diesel and the extra servicing cost.

It's going to depend on the type of mileage as well. A diesel is going to be far more suited to a 250 mile round trip on the motorway every weekend than 40 miles of takeaway deliveries 6 nights a week.
