RTX 4090 coldfeet!

-- A cheaper card would do for now for what i need.

no its for 3D content work, 3d modeling, unreal 5, rendering, video work. gaming is secondary.

Are you sure about that? A lot of the software involved in this ^^ type of work uses the GPU now (and VRAM can be pretty important too), so if time is money you might be handicapping yourself severely here by going for a 3080.

Depends what you want the pc for but looking at your component list there would be a lot of savings possible.

Agreed. I can see around £350 worth, maybe more, since these choices (like the motherboard) contribute relatively little to performance, whereas a 4090 probably would (depending on the software and what you're doing with it).

You'd know your workload better than me obviously, but from Puget's benchmarks here, the difference between a 4090 and 3080 in UE5, Blender and V-Ray is humongous!
never mentioned getting a 4080 but anything is better than a GTX 780. the 4090 would be great for my content work. the internet says the 4080Ti might have 20gb VRAM but it is just rumours at the moment

The 4090 is the way to go if you're content creative and gaming on the same machine. productivity via GPU accel is obviously far higher than any other card as mentioned, and with gaming, do you really need to game past what DP1.4a has to offer? And what games need to run at 240fps+?

I'm gaming at 100-120fps in most games either due to path tracing and max settings for everything at 3440x1440 (superb IQ), or using DLDSR 5160x2160 (also superb IQ but leveraging the power of the 4090 and retaining the 144Hz refresh rate of my 34" ultrawide whilst benefiting from the better image quality from DLDSR 2.25x).

You mentioned a 3080 :) (There's no 4080 in the benches I linked)

As a 2nd hand stop gap card yes until the 50 series was out, then to sell it and buy one of them.

Yeah, that's why I mentioned it in the benches, because if time is money, it looks like the difference is so large for those quoted apps, that I think it could cost you far more than the saving is worth.

For a gamer I'd just say "meh, whatever", but for content creation, if those results translate to an actual workload, then we're talking many hours and even whole days saved in render time and much more effective use of UE5.

yeah if it was just for games i'd spend a grand less. but as someone who does a lot of 3D work and spend a load of time doing creative things it makes sence. one day i'll be looking to sell to make money so i should get what i need. ideally that would be top of the line stuff but as prices are sky high you have to think do i really need it. i think i probably should get the 4090 based on the ideas bounced around here. 1.6k is a very steep price for one componemt but would probably be worth it in the long run at least for me.

I recently went from a 1080ti to RTX4090 FE and it‘s a great card. I did consider a 3080ti but the performance from the 4090 won me around. My logic was a 4090 will last me longer before the need to upgrade but I suppose it will need to as it will take a while to save up enough to

I don't know what your time is worth in a literal ££, but if you spend a lot of time waiting around for stuff to complete, or are going to struggle using the things you want to use (like with UE5), then yeah, I think it would be well worth the money. The level of usability a 4090 gives this type of software is very significant for a creator.

Obviously if you're still at early stages and aren't working on large projects yet, then that's a different consideration, but if you're doing serious work right now, I don't think I'd want to be stuck with a 3080 until who knows when.
