UEFA Champions & Europa League Football Thread ** spoilers ** [19th - 21st September 2023]

Bayern didn't really create much. They got a stupidly soft penalty and a goalkeeper error. They controlled possession but didn't create a lot, I don't think Kane even had a chance.

Well it wasn’t the capitulation I feared after the second goal so that’s something positive. If Onana starts to consistently remember that a goalie is meant to save the ball then things aren’t so bad with the team.

The first goal would have had a sub 0.1 xg too though. Excluding the pen and the mistake, they got 2 goals from 1.7 xg which is pretty standard.
1.7 v 1.89 so we actually played better! And we have a **** team!

For all the Onana bashing that is actually his first real mistake and statistically he's been absolutely fine. Nothing amazing but nowhere near the disaster rival fans are desperate for him to be. He's suffered from the ridiculous defensive crisis we've had (this was literally the first game we've had the same back four in consecutive games) and we've been giving up a lot of chances which we weren't last season.

He seems to have a great attitude, has not been shy of taking the blame even when it isn't his to take. If we can let him settle and get a settled defence in front of him we'll be fine I think.

Just back from the game. Perfect way to start the champs league campaign. 4 quality goals and a clean sheet. Got absolutely drenched on the way back to the car though :(.

As to the above about Onana, he's let in nearly every shot on target hasn't he?

Nope, and save percentage is a useless metric because it doesn't take into account how difficult the save is. You can have a 90% save success and be underperforming or have a 40% and be overperforming, it depends how tough the shots were. He was actually performing better than expected until the Brighton game when they finished incredibly efficiently so he's a little under expected now. Considering the insane mitigating circumstances it is nothing to panic about.

Are you sure? 12 shots on target and 9 goals conceded I read. Either he's unluckily faced a load of worldies or he really isn't doing better than expected.

To odd to my observations from last night. Raya has had it very easy so far. Not a single shot was even close to troubling, same as Vs Everton. Be interesting to see how he does in a tougher game.

Havertz was woeful in the first half, contributed 2 fouls and I think that was it. It looked like the other players were actively not passing to him on occasion. Second half he did actually look better and have some impact on the game but still he's so far below the standard he should be at. Really don't understand even what position he should be in.
