Does little scratches/imperfections bother you when PC building?

Yes, massively. I like things to be perfect and go out of my way to keep them as such.

In the past if things get damaged or even get minor aesthetic marks or scratches I end up getting not just really annoyed about it but end up ‘falling out of love’ (for want of a better term) with whatever it is and end up changing it for something else haha!

I've been like that in the past/currently (hence the thread), not sure if it's just too much stress, money and effort to maintain everything in pristine condition lol.

I think every build I do there's always a tiny something slightly "wrong" or a small mistake made that no one would ever notice but the builder. I sometimes show people and they think I'm joking it can be so tiny lol.

Just wondering where everyone draws the line. Do small things matter to you or is it purely the functioning of the device that matters? Sometimes im tempted to rebuy things.. then I realize I'm not rich and a tiny imperfections don't matter.

It bothers me massively. So much so that I'll send something back if it doesn't meet my expectations.

As someone mentioned, expectations do scale with cost. When I spend £2000 on a graphics card or over £200 on a case, I won't tolerate any imperfections out the box.

However there is a flip side to this, if an item is a good example, say quiet operation, overclock well etc I would be able to stomach some cosmetic imperfections.

I've found most pc cases come with imperfections regardless of cost, be it scratches, scuff marks, panels that don't sit completely flush etc.

When I've gone to the trouble of getting a replacement and doing comparisons I end up just settling for the best example, often neither are perfect but I keep the one with the imperfections I can tolerate the most. If they're both bad I try a completely different product.

Little things like scratches etc are so easy to do if a component just touches another, or the door of a chassis touches something else going in or out, especually with black metal coating. Wires as well can be so easy to mark if they touch a side in a difficult case.

Honestly its better to let it all go somewhat but I'm having to teach myself that...slowly

The last monitor I sold was a year old but still had all the wrappings on it :P not a scratch on that thing. The guy who bought it was blown backwards as he also got it for 60% of what an equal specced screen would cost the day I sold it which was a bit lower than what I paid. He almost danced on the way out the door :P.
 
I spend less than 1% of the time looking at the PC, i don't worry about scuffs and marks, it's nice and all (especially when new), but i'm more concerned about the system functioning. Reliability > Pretty, mostly anyway.
 
Life is still testing me. New AIO had this and new GPU had a bit of the golden pin missing on a £1850 card. My standards are too high?

Oh I know and it makes me misrable as well haha. I need to get over it lol. PC building brings out the worst of my ocd! Oddly not the software side haha.

Neither of them are "supposed" to be that way. The minor chip on the PCI connector has likely been caused from inserting it (whether that was the OP or from QA testing). The minor paint chipping on the AIO is probably more carelessness from the manufacturer.

I think in reality most people accept that you can't get anything "perfect" these days. So minor imperfections are overlooked.

The chip on the PCI slot is definitely being anal though - assuming the connector makes full contact you're never going to see it. The other one I might be a bit unhappy about as it's much more evident when RGB is used.

Yeah the PCIe came that way and knowing Asus I'd be paranoid they would try to void my warranty if i kept it, it also had bad coil whine so it's getting collected today.

The cooler I asked Phanteks if the lid can be replaced just in case. My case is glass front and back. It's a minor detail but everything is so expensive these days you'd hope it would be perfect.

All that been said I think in the long run it would be better for me to tolerate small blemishes as there always seems to be something these days.
