Hi all
Any recommendations for a visit to Tenerife or Lanzarote for a week next month? Need a break with the wife but never been to the Canaries. Would appreciate any recommendations, tips, areas to avoid etc

Aiming for quiet area rather than busy, food important, ideally a good all inclusive with multiple restaurants. Aiming to eat, stroll, recharge.

I went to Puerto del Carmen in Lanzarote in November before was lovely.

Weather was totally fine, and it wasn't too busy, there is an older part of town where the fishing boats come in which is much better for food (it's where the locals go) avoid the touristy beach front ones.
 
We've been twice to Playa Blanca in Lanzarote in summer. Its nice and relaxed and there's a bit of a town for shopping, bars, restaurants etc. There's a long walkway along the coastline that will also take you east to the next town which we all enjoyed for some light exercise when the sun wasn't so hot and a bit more upmarket shopping there. We'd go again. You don't get hassled by the bar & restaurant owners to come in which is something I find a real turn off. Avoid Costa Rica in Gran Canaria: you can't move without them all getting in your face trying to drag you in - never going back to that poo hole ever again.
 
I stayed at the all inclusive Columbus hotel in Playas De Las Americas and it was full of cockroaches. They are a bit of a problem on the island due to the heat. It was a relatively cheap place to stay so can’t really complain.
 
I'm going to Lanzarote next month (Playa Blanca) for the same reasons as OP but we opted for a villa instead of the usual All Inc. in order to avoid the general food options you get in hotels.

What you save on accommodation, you spend on eating out if you don't cook yourself.
Car hire was cheaper than a private transfer but you could get a taxi instead I think.

Restaurant recommendations would be nice if anyone has any?
 
In puerto del carmen i went to La Carmencita del Puerto and it was good. I stsyed in playa blanca and cannot really recommend much sorry we drove around the whole island.

I was in Costa Teguise Lanzarote in February this year, this might explain it

That is opposite the tallest building in Lanzarote which is an hotel in Arecife.

We found the restaurants of a really good quality in general in PB.
Citurna casual food was our favourite. It's on a back street with a crap outlook, but the food was excellent. We had to book, but that was in the kids summer hols.
Like you we stayed in a villa. Taxi's are easy to order & quick for villa pick ups.
Having a car was great, as it's a very spread out resort. We often drove to each end to go for a walk along the promenade.
Timanfaya national park is not far away & has some great volcanic & interesting scenery.

Been to Tenerife a few times, nothing special but does the job out of season on the cheap

re Lanzarote, Puerto Del Carman was poor, old town passable but the beach front strip is awful, no character whatsoever

been twice plenty to do in puerto would recommend.

Had a quick look I couldn't find it, but there is a Top Gun bar now, I think its in the same place, but doesnt look like it used to.

I did a beach lifeguard course there, in 2008, jeeeeeeez 15 years ago now...... we'd be down at the beach early like 8am, but after that I would go for an english breakfast at this place every day.

I will go back one day......

Thanks, was looking at that one and have booked for next week.
Bit of a trek (3 miles) but we'll hit a couple of bars on the way.

Stayed up in Los Gigantes last April. Just an apartment through booking dot com. Great scenery, no loads of tourists and coastal. Plenty of sea kayaking, dolphin tours and so on. Easy to get bus to the National Park to go up the volcano as well.
