Pfsense standard Vs paid edition?

I used to have pfsense.
I would recommend having a look at Firewalla.
Unless you're doing something particularly bespoke, their devices work well and are much less hassle to setup and configure via the phone app.

Used to be pfsense fan, then moved to Opnsense and not looked back.

Running it in proxmox just for the hell of it on a small mff with 10gb pci card and 2.5gb sfp, runs perfect.

Timely updates too.

Had a look it briefly, but with the shipping charges and the purple hardware issue decided to wait. They're not cheap units either. I reverted one of my units back to CE last night and that's fine for now. Opnsense or Sophos XG Home again.

No, I agree they are not the cheapest option, but the time I save on setup and configuration has been well worth it.
Sounds like you have a stable setup now, so that's cool.

I’ve bailed on pfsense after the recent plus debacle. Tbh, openwrt does everything I need, I was tempted to go back to vyos but Linux is generally superior to freebsd when it comes to the routing and firewall stack now.

VyOS is also Linux, but their lack of web interface doesn't make it the most appealing.
I'm stuck on Mikrotik CHR (Linux), OpenWRT is pretty simplistic but works perfectly. I would use OPNSense/pfSense but you need a good CPU for PPPoE.

yeah, I was trying to make the point that they were both Linux but didn’t really make that clear there. Was trying to say that freebsd isn’t really the hot stuff as a router that it used to be.

Yup bit of a PR kerfuffle.. CE still perfectly fine, but having a look at Opnsense.

If I go back to Sophos XG, I’ll need to do a Linux box for let’s encrypt

Splunk has taken over today on this wet day. Will look at firewalls during the week.

Did notice that the FreeBSD dev seems to be shrinking.

I was on the verge of delving into pfsense but this is making me think again now.

Wanted to use a small dedicated device with low power draw.

From a security update and update process perspective, how does that work out of the box?

I’ve got CE running on 2.7.2 with no issues. I think it’s more, what do your require and what expectations do you have?

I have a Dell R220 that I’m going to try Opnsense on.

Basic stuff in the first instance, wouldn't mind dabbling with IPS functionality eventually.

IPS/IDS would need to be via Snort/Suricata.

Sophos XG Home as a decent IPS/IDS

Opnsense with zenmore
