GPU upgrade - Nvidia 4070 or AMD 7800XT?

I'm looking for some advice on which GPU upgrade path to go down. I'm upgrading from an AMD RX 5700 (the non-XT version) which has served me well for 3-4 years but is starting to show it's age at 1440p. The rest of my system is AMD, with an X570 motherboard and Ryzen 7 5800X cpu and 16GB DDR4-3200.

I'm torn between the two graphics card options I have -

7800XT - This card has good raster performance, slight future proofing through more memory (16GB), and staying in the AMD ecosystem I continue to exploit AMD infinity fabric.
4070 - Generally slightly better performance, higher price, slight future proofing through ray-tracing.

I also use AMD Link to stream my PC to other devices, although this is frustratingly hit and miss and often just doesn't work at all for no apparent reason. I believe Nvidia have a similar streaming solution in their drivers?

I play in 1440p and usually high-max settings (with a few non-noticable graphics options turned down).

Buy the 4070 - so you can have a good cry at how much you overpaid for an underperforming graphics card with too little memory. And then cry some more in January when Nvidia announce the fixed "Super" version. :D

I went AMD because of the Vram and the games i play. On PC i tend to play shooters, esports and driving games. With these games i want high fps so Ray Tracing is out, the AMD card made more sense for the money as it's faster for my needs. My choice was 7900xt though doubt i would have stretched to a 4070ti and again it only had 12gb vram.

No, they don't :)

Not very "super" then is it?

No.... it looks like they are doing just enough to stop the success of the 7800XT / 7700XT, but that's really all its about.

They can't eat too deep into the full AD 104 die because that's the 4070Ti, they will make something between 5888 cores (4070) and 7680 cores (4070Ti) with 10% more cores it would have 6480 cores, that would put it about 2% faster than the 7800XT, so it will be higher up on the bar charts and Nvidia know that's all it need's to be.

And Nvidia being Nvidia you don't get that for free.

The 2070 Super (i have one) is 10% faster than the 2070.

Nvidia do as little as possible to make you want their stuff, and no more, its only because the 7800XT looks like a better buy that they are going to tweak the 4070, slightly. Give them a crumb of pie....

At same price I'd buy 4070 but both not worth anything above 500. I am waiting for black Friday deals, ideally get 7900xt or 4070 ti at a good discountl.

Both decent cards, but both overpriced, one with too little RAM, and the other inferior RT/upscaling tech (if that matters to you).

See what you can get cheapest is pretty much my only advice, or see if a higher performing part pops up on the MM for a decent price.

Thanks, I think I'll see if I can get the 7800XT on offer at somepoint, or even snag the 7900XT at a decent price in the sales or something.

4070 is hard to recommend due to vram limitations, but it does have the edge in RT and having DLSS is something to consider
7800XT is hard to recommend because it's basically a 6800XT... A 2 year old card hampered when it comes to RT which is gaining more traction and will continue to do so. Plus FSR is poor.

Neither are a good buy at today'd prices
Both have big shortcomings which make them a huge waste of money if you plan to keep them for 2-3 years
If AMD had decent RT performance and if Nvidia had put more vram on their cards, these 2 cards would be very good choices. Unfortunately they didn't, so they're not

Agree with most people both are poor buys unless you're desperate for a card.

I would personally hold off until the supers are released. Might force some decent price drops OR nab you better performance.

My gut feel is both AMD and NV are going to have to drop prices to keep sales up, but who knows!

@jim5000 If you need a card now then the 7800XT is the better buy (£499 for the mba on OCUK) as it has more vram and can be overclocked to close to 4070ti/6950XT level around 22k on timespy.

In regards to waiting for the supers that’s at least 3-4 months away and you could end up spending your whole life waiting for stuff- time doesn’t get given back ever! BUT you can always buy a better card (as you will always continue to make money- just won’t be able to recoup lost time waiting!) when you need it ie if a game comes out that makes the 7800XT crawl in say 3-4 years.

3-4 years? Now if you wanna play Alan Wake 2 with path tracing, or Cities Skylines 2 above 1080p lol :D
I think over the next couple of years we are going to see a big jump in what is needed to run higher settings in games
