Hi,

I am about to build my very first PC, for gaming and programming...

There are two GPUs im thinking about purchasing: GeForce RTX 3060 Gaming OS or a RTX 4060 OS. From my research, usually the ones with the "Gaming" word perform better than the normal ones... but to which point is this true?
I know some scenarios may be different, but in General, which one is worth it?

Im seeing some 4060 cheaper than 3060 Gaming ones..

Imagine both were the same price, would you buy the "RTX 3060 GAMING OC" or "RTX 4060 OC?

Regards,
Junior

Generally the name doesn't make any difference. Some cards will have a factory overclock but all Nvidia cards tend to run quite near as fast as they can be made to run, straight out the box. It is generally not worth paying extra for an overclocked card and instead you should pick one you like the design of and look at reviews to see how the cooler performs.

3060 is relatively old now which is why you will see 4060 sometimes being cheaper. The 3060 was a bit of the odd card out in the 30 series as it has so much vram.

If they are the same price it's probably better to get the 4060 as it has newer tech including frame generation and uses less power.

Gaming branded cards sometimes have better coolers and a slight factory overclock, but it depends on the brand and the model. MSI's Gaming X cooler is one of their better ones (it is higher than Mech, for example), but you'd need to check reviews for the 3060 one.

At this end of the market, the model isn't very important and I'd expect the performance difference between all the cards will be between 1-2%.

I find this an unpleasant decision. The 3060 is slower than the 4060 and uses significantly more power, so in theory it should be an easy decision, but 8GB cards can have texture and performance consistency issues in some games already, while the 3060 is getting kind of dated (on a performance level) anyway.

What would I rather have? Neither, a 6700 XT has higher performance and more VRAM.

As others have said, you’re best off going with a 6700XT instead, it’s around 20% faster than a 4060 and has 50% more VRAM so will last longer.
