Mortgage Rate Rises

Don't blame you really.

I think if I was remortgaging now I'd want to go for variable.. But the security of a fix is hard to pass on when you are in the moment
Yeah, 100%. We have a young daughter, nursery isn't cheap and for us the security of a fix definitely helps to make things feel a bit more grounded.

We have no grand plans at this stage, we ultimately wanted to do that cliche thing of buying a house and making it a home. The mortgage is in a sensible enough position that we can afford it on a single salary if one of us was to lose a job and we're not breaking the bank each month to pay it - but again, it's the security of fixed that basically made that decision for us.

The problem is, and I mean this respectfully, if you are a "bystander" outside of the thick of things - life in the UK does seem this way. By that I mean, keep yourself to yourself, introvert type hobbies, away from the hustle and bustle - it doesn't matter where you live, the novelty will wear off.

I'm introvert by heart so moved myself somewhere where at least I could see constant change, business, the arts come to me etc...

Ah but I do love Wales. If I was staying in the UK I'd stay here.
I love the outdoors and just wish there was more of it here. There's barely any in England due example. Just too many people.even the national parks here are covered in human development.

Scotland is too cold and wet.

I may well get bored eventually in new Zealand. But I will definitely be bored staying here.

Really. I love to explore. And moving half way across the world also makes it easier to explore Australia, Indonesia etc etc.

There's loads of outdoors in the UK... Where are you looking?! This Sunday just gone we nipped to the South Downs for an early morning out and we bumped into 2 people in the entire 4 hours we were there. If you're going to national parks in London then sure, you're going to have a lot more people about but England is full of amazing outdoor space.

Agree that Scotland is too cold and wet, it's also full of Scottish people.

Theres no true wilderness in the UK, I agree with you on this.

I believe the UK is something like 15pc forest cover for example.

And that's mainly loaded in Scotland.

You can't really get lost in england and even Wales. Scotland, yes you can. But it's not like you're going to die from it.

Growth is flat, interest rates are high and inflation is still way over 2%.

BOE isn't going to change tack any time soon even if it means tipping us into recession, I accept that 11% inflation isn't acceptable in a country with no growth but I think I'd accept a bit of inflation if we had healthy growth numbers!

Personally I find that the Scots are very welcoming people.
I mean the big cities are of course cities but outside there I would say that the Scots are far more welcoming than any area I can think of elsewhere in the UK.

If the scots succeed in Indy at some point and look to rejoin the Eu we have discussed already and we will relocate to Scotland!

Die? Plenty of places I could drop you in the UK and you'd have issues but that is another story entirely. To me you just have an extremely pessimistic view of the UK and nothing anyone says will change that.

I don't think so.

With 60 million people and most of the country being farmed or pillaged for resources England especially has very little true wilderness.

How far do you have to walk to find the nearest road in England? It's not very far at all. It only had 10pc forest cover. We rank terribly in most environmental lists.

Even the national parks are ravaged and aren't true national parks.

Also, it's all owned. There is very little roaming you can do. Scotland should be applauded for keeping its right to roam. The rest of the UK is firmly into ownership = exclusive access. And it's getting worse.

This isn't the country I want to live in.

The rivers have limited access, The lakes too, everything. The water is polluted. The hills are bare.

Its just not for me.

Na you could drop someone anywhere in the UK in any season (as long as not naked or something stupid like that) and within three hours they could be in a pub eating steak and chips.

Name a place and we'll see.
Open a map, go to Scotland, particularly the North and west, heck even mid wales in the 'green desert'. Plenty of places, also I think you underestimate how much ground you can cover in 3 hours in some places like this. Open boggy ground you'd be crying into your boots rather than a steak and chips.

Maybe 3 hours was being optimistic in North Scotland but even here, picking a spot seemingly in the middle of nowhere, straight line distance to nearest pub is 25km.

Depending on terrain I could do that in under a day, pub in time for happy hour.

I can tell you rarely go out hiking in the UK. Especially outside of summer.

Scotland is different. It's beautiful. And I would say it has true wilderness.

Even Wales too. But much less so. I've gotten a bit lost in the forest around Caerphilly but it's easy to get out.. Ie. You know you will be out soon enough. Deep mid Wales could be a bit sketchy if you didn't have a map and were dumped there.

England, not really. Maybe in the upper north West. But still, you'd find your way out.

Awesome, where you thinking?

@413x When I saw this I immediately thought Rwanda

Never felt like going New Zealand myself. Been Australia and that was nice for a long holiday, but again would not want to live there.

You have been considering leaving the UK for quite some time. Have you considered different parts of the UK? You sure it just isn't Wales that's the problem? How comes you want to leave? :)

Edit: Just catched up on the posts. Horses for courses I suppose. I like it here :D
