Hi all,

Like many this Xmas a PS5 might be bought for their child. I’d like my lad to
be able to play it straight away, so I need to setup and put back in the box.

The issue is that I don’t want him knowing he’s getting it so need use the transfer service from his PS4 pro to 5 on xmas eve when he’s in bed. Can anyone remember how long it takes for around 500gb of data to transfer over? The idea is to plug the 5 in my office, turn his 4 on and do it all whilst he’s asleep. Is it doable?!

Thanks

Andy

I seem to think it was several hours when I moved mine.

Alternative option could be to get a USB SSD drive - Plug it into the PS4 and move all games data, saves etc to the "Extended Storage". Then on Christmas Eve or even Christmas day you can just use the transfer data option but not move any game data (as you can just swap the USB straight to PS5 and it will be recognised)

Benefit of the above is also that you don't take up any of the PS5 internal space that could be better used for PS5 games (which won't run from a USB Drive)

I've heard horror stories. Do you have PS+ ?
Genuinely, I'd be tempted to backup all the saves into the cloud and then download those onto the PS5 (15-20 minutes work) and then reinstall the required games.

Taking the setup experience away? That would suck.

I'm not sure there is much of one for the PS5? Other than updates after updates :p I doubt an 8 year old will care for anything other than getting straight on a game.

Anyway not going to bother with the transfer of data, he has ps plus so will just sign him and ensure all his settings are right etc. Ta for the responses

@Andy__C - I'm still setting my lad's up as I'm only on 30mb so its been downloading his games for a while now. As suggested here he has PS Plus so I just downloaded his saved data for each game to the new PS5 and it's just a case of downloading his games, stick back in the box, wrap it and he doesn't know a thing.

He's still on his PS4 whilst this is all happening too.

I have collected him PS plus PS5 monthly games over the past year so putting some of them on otherwise he's just playing the usual Fortnite, Rocket League, EAFC

Are you going to sit there take it out of the box for him and plug it in as well? How about inserting or downloading the game too while you are at it? Then even hand him the controller too and the. Press the buttons for him while he’s playing it?

You taking all the fun out of it. Let him do it himself.

I used to go mental when my dad set stuff up for me at Christmas. I always wanted to do it myself no matter how long something took.

Well he’s 8 years old so absolutely I’m taking it out of the box and plugging it in for him, he wouldn’t have a clue! Ridiculous question really.

He will appreciate being able to turn it on and jump straight into astro bot or Spiderman 2, whereas other poor kids will be waiting hours/days for their games to download whilst the servers are absolutely killed.

I also setup my other sons new tablet last night so he has Minecraft and Roblox etc ready to play when he gets it out of the box, I’m such a bad dad!

It’s a bit much to say it’s sucking all the fun out of it, but I do definitely think there is something valuable and empowering that comes from ‘owning putting something together’ - even as a kid.

… but maybe that’s not the route to go for when dealing with an impatient 8 year old, in these specific circumstances. Pros and cons! :)

What would probably be the wrong approach though is setting everything up because you feel like you need to own the setting up (you know the best and any mistakes would be unacceptable and cause you frustration, you’re the most efficient person for the task etc.) - that’s the sort of BS micromanagement that I would deploy myself because my inner child needs to control everything :D

Fair play getting it all downloaded in advance - seems some have forgotten you're on 30 meg bb, and we aren't in the era of cartridge games....

When I was getting my various Segas as a kid, I loved u boxing them and setting them up myself - maybe you can let your son take the lead with the PS5 and help out. A shared experience on Christmas then :)

Also top job with getting a library of PSN titles through the year, that's pretty cool.
