Why are AMD motherboards slower then intel motherboards

Hi Guys

Maybe am missing something here but when I look through the specs of Intel motherboards some spec the ram OC up to 8000mhz,
Where the AMD motherboards I looked at are saying only up to 6400mhz :confused:


Is there a reason for this like maybe something to do with the CPU ?

This might be a mangled explanation because I don't overclock memory, but I believe that was because of the limitation of what was possible to run 1:1 with the FLCK, whereas anything above 6200 was pretty difficult with the original BIOS/AGESA and so most buyers didn't bother, especially since AMD themselves said low latency 6000 was optimal for Zen 4.

AMD have since released an update that allows much higher speeds, but from what I'm aware of, the greater speeds are not worth the cost of running asynchronously.

With Intel, I think you have to use gear 2 (asynchronous speeds) with DDR5 anyway.
 
Yeah and good low latency RAM at 6400 MT/s is fast enough even for most Intel requirements.

Most people don’t need and can’t run speeds above 7400.

That motherboard may have been tested with 8000 MT/s RAM but that was probably with a really high quality set of RAM modules and an Intel processor with an amazing memory controller on a test bed with tons of cooling.

XMP/EXPO memory profiles is still overclocking So there’s no promise at all that you can run those speeds.

I’d get AMD in a heartbeat for the X3D processors over the hot and EOL Intel 14th gen for one.

Yes am leaning towards going AMD, shame the AMD motherboards seem to be a lower spec then intel ones like am finding it impossible to find one with WiFi 7 even the really high price ones are only WiFi 6

Admit I no need WiFi 7 right now but I normally only upgrade my cpu & motherboard about every 5+ years or so these days so I try get one with the latest stuff on it

Intel boards have wifi 7 cause they recently launched new boards. AMD boards are from last year before wifi 7. AMD boards for zen 5 in 2024 will have wifi 7

Have to say though the X3D chips are impressive for gaming personally I'd recommend the 14700K over them for anyone not purely gaming.

On a sort of related note I'm more impressed by the Ryzen Z1 Extreme - even with a 5 Watt profile it will give a 5800X a good run, never mind on the full 30 Watts - makes anything seem hot and power hungry and runs 7500MT memory.

Ryzen Z1 Extreme :confused:

I Searched ocuk for "Ryzen Z1 Extreme" and nothing seemed to of come up

EDIT: I Just googled it and it looks like it for hand held devices like the Asus ROG Ally

My problem is am forever running out of cpu power & memory (32GB) while browsing the internet all the time as am always opening like 1000 tabs or windows :cry:

Wish i knew which cpu (intel vs AMD) was best for coping with this

Maybe more cores then, I have no idea about multiple tabs. But yes, that does certainly eat memory.

That is where the old HEDT/workstation platforms like Socket 2011 were handy... AMD having a bit of a foray into that market again but generally the sector is now hideously over priced for desktop use :( even the 7960X is over £1400.

You can run 96GB quite easily in two dimms, and 64GB dimms will be out soon and some AM5 boards will support them, so a total of 256GB…! HEDT lite in a way :D

I had to make the choice between Intel and AMD, I moved from my old intel based PC to 7800X3D cpu iwth B650E chipset board and could not be happier, advantages are cooler temps, air coolers are not an issue with that CPU and as I'm a gamer no brainer, as for ram well my Asus B650E board does support 8000Mhz ram, but you don't need that speed, sweet spot is 6000, I actually use 5600MHZ DDR5 ram speed(64GB) and more then happy in gaming, it's easy to think more ram speed is always better. As to wifi 7 well you always get something better down the road ie WiFi 8 etc, I prefer wired ethernet but you do have expansion PCI-E slots on motherboards for a reason if your board does not support WIFI 7. USB will probably have WIFI 7 as well down the road.

I would say if your main interest is gaming go AMD, if you multi task etc then water cooled Intel IMHO.

One big plus side is AM5 motherboard support is here for awhile, another reason why I went AMD for gaming.

While a bit of a generalisation I think somewhat it comes down to the different approaches by Intel and AMD and how that plays out with their partners - in terms of how mature and well documented, etc. the product is at the point of hand-off and the process of supporting partners work up their own implementations, etc.
