M.2 problems on Gigabyte Z590 Master

So I have a Z590 Master running with 10900k. As the CPU isn't PCI Gen 4 I use the 2x M.2 chipset slots with Samsung 1tb 970 Pro in one and 1TB 980 Pro (C drive) in the other. Everything has been fine for months but then the 970 started playing up, games crashing and folders not opening etc. Thought the drive was dying so bought a 2tb 970 Pro and all seemed fine for a few days but then the same problems. Re-seated it and its fine for a few hours but then problems again. Can't run any tests on it when it does this but when its fine it works perfectly.

Its not a SATA conflict as I am using SATA ports 2&3

Any ideas? Bios is 8a

Is your PC dusty, or not really? If it is, I'd try cleaning the contacts, you never know.

I assume you have checked the smart data 'n such?

Well it seemed fine until I started gaming (no games on that drive) when I then tried scanning it with Windows Error Checking it gives the "There was a problem with scanning this drive", it had scanned without issues before. The exact same thing that happened with the old bios. When it was working Crystal Disk Info showed zero errors or problems with the drive. Now it doesn't even list the drive. Crystal Disk Mark still lists it but gives this error if you try and run any test "Failed Create File".

So it has to be either the motherboard or maybe Windows?? Both M.2 slots I'm using are on the chipset and not CPU PCI lanes so I would think that rules out the CPU? I could buy a 11900k for £280 from the forest and then the PCI Gen 4 M.2 slot would be available to use, I could live with 2. There are 10900k on ebay, one has 2 bids and is already at £155with 6 days to go so I could likley get good money for mine.

I need a Master or equivalent board because it has 2x temperature sensor headers which I use for the water loops, water temp controls pump and fan speeds. Another 490 Master would cost at least the same as a 11900k and the 390 Master is similar money to the 11900k.

For the record: Crystal Disk doesn't show broken Samsung drives (870 Evo, 970 Evo Plus new revision, or 980 Pro) as broken, since they report as in good health, but it is usually clear from the smart data if you know what you're looking for.

This is the data from Samsung Magician SMART export

From what I can see, your serial number is not affected and the drive isn't showing any flash errors that are consistent with the problem.

Yeah I think its got to be either the MB or Windows causing the problem as 2 drives showing exactly the same problems in the same slot just seems too coincidencial. Ran an extended SMART self test and all normal.

So I just ran Windows Error Checking on the drive, passed. Fired up Steam and Insurgency Sandstorm (on my C drive) quit the game and error checked it again and it bugs out. What could cause this to happen?
