Upgrading my 3070 to 4070 super, do I need a new CPU?

Hi all, long story short, I have a 10600K with 16GB RAM...thinking the 10600K is apparently 'ideal' for the 3070, it's likely I may need an upgrade. PC also only has 16GB RAM so probably need to double that.

Looking for the cheapest way to take this forward (I could potentially go for an overclock if it would work (though I wouldn't know where to start these days lol), my CPU is water cooled FWTW) - I can always do a PC upgrade next year which would help spread the costs.

Thanks in advance for any advice :)

what resolution do you play at?
To be fair, whatever I can - I guess 1440p would be the ideal (well, 4K but that's never going to happen!). I do have a very basic question on that, I tried running RDR2 at 1440p (2560x1440) but the aspect ratio is off on my TV, it's like a half-way between 16:9 and 4:3...any ideas?

Is it fine in desktop? Could be the TV itself doing some weird scaling. Might need to check the TV settings if it's trying to force a certain screen ratio/cropping with the image.

Seems fine on the desktop - it's just in RDR2 (to be fair, it's all I'm playing at the moment) - I will double check setting the desktop though
4070 Super should do 4K at decent settings in the majority of games and the 10600K should pair it acceptably for most of them, though I'd expect the lows to improve with a 13th gen or Zen 4 CPU.
Which requires a new mobo etc...looks like I can hold off for now just getting the GPU and potentially overclocking if needs be

10600K is still a decent enough CPU - it's got 6 cores / 12 threads, and the single thread performance is still strong.

What speed is your current RAM? it might be that whilst upgrading to 32GB you can drop in some faster ram that gives you +5% more performance for example?

No harm in giving it a go. If you did upgrade the RAM, you'd be limited to 13th/14th gen if you decided to upgrade the CPU/motherboard, since AM5 doesn't support DDR4.

I wouldn't put the 4070 super as a 4k gpu personally
Seems fine to me for 4k60

HU had 59fps. so not hitting 60fps without the help of dlss for a new card isn't what I'd call a 4k card. excellent 1440p though. think the 4070ti super with increased memory bus is the one to look at. 4070super within a couple % 3080 at 4k, whereas was 20% ahead at 1080p, and that's the memory bus gimping it's 4k performance...same thing happenned with the 4070ti..hense why they increase it for the super. Don't think you'll find any reviews really calling it a 4k card... new games only getting more demanding, and screens only getting higher and higher refresh rates...though got to remember older 4k titles different matter..doom it hit 139fps 4k...cyberpunk 39fps
If i'm dropping a lot of money buildoinmg a rig and a lot of money buying a 4k monitor, I'll really want to know that's it's a proper 4k card..overall cost of everything wont be a big % going up to a more powerful card for true 4k gaming...
why just don't think it's a proper 4k card. we're here to advise people...as long as we make people aware...just my take on it

The reason why I said to the OP: it'll do 4K, is because the OP was only expecting 1440p, but wistfully hoping for 4K (I assume they already own the TV).

I'd generally agree with you and not recommend a 4070 Super for 4K, but if someone has modest expectations and doesn't want to play 4K/Ultra in the very latest games (i.e. late 2023/early 2024 AAA), then a 4070 Super is decently capable of it.

TPU uses max settings for their benchmarks and I assume HUB does too, so knocking them down should push it consistently above 60 fps.

Turns out I have to have the desktop in 1440p then have the game in borderless window to get 144Mhz or it reverts to 120Mhz - I suppose at least I now have a work around :)

Current is 4000Mhz but my son had 2x32GB spare 3600Mhz RAM he said I could have so have thrown that in for now

Yeah thanks, at least I've not paid for the RAM - I figure Mobo/CPU/RAM upgrade next year or so

Yeah, I'm not a heavy gamer but I do like to have a good version of a game when I play...got Switch, XSX, PS5 and this PC so all bases covered for when a particular game comes along. A life-long PlayStation gamer but now I'm thinking I may as well just stick to PC and have the consoles for the exclusives...so may as well sell the XSX lol

 Sorry if I came across all aggressive with my first statement..wasn't my intent...get where you're coming from.

@NF7-S...so am i reading this right you're playing thru your 4k telly at 1440p resolution...but it's not scaling right? if that's your primary display, and I know it's more money, have you thought maybe waiting to see reviews of the more powerful cards when they drop...only saying as running a 3070ti with my 7800x3d and been hoping to wait to survive until 5000 series cards drop, but not sure I'll make it, so looking at the super cvards myself...some games are fine, and my son plays on my 3080 he nicked off me for fortnitie etc on pc, but others are trash..tries life of Pi and just epic fail...my son lasted less than 60 seconds before saying it was trash and played it on the xbox, and got a far better experience...at 4k, if that's your tv, the gpu matters far more than the cpu, as it's mainly the gpu that's the bottleneck, and as it's the most expensive componenet, may be better getting next step up in gpu terms, and waiting for your cpu upgrade a few month later than planned...
depressing thinking that when i got the 3080, I told myself I'd never buy a gpu more expensive than that, and here I am looking at the more expensive stuff

Ha yeah, before the 3070 I'd not spent more than ~£100 on a GPU (certainly not on the overall GPU upgrade!), I thought the 3070 would last me years but I'm not overly fussed about 4k - I like ray tracing and effects so PC on the TV for me. The 4070 Super will be good enough for a few years I'll see how things pan out and probably upgrade the CPU etc next year or year after ready for the next GPU upgrade a year or 2 after that.

Thanks for everyone's input, much appreciated. Very happy with the 4070 Super, got a >50% increase on the RDR2 benchmark form average 60 to 100.

Gone for a simple OC on the CPU to tide me over...got RDR2 at 1440p with everything set to maximum :)
