under 6k is disregarded over 16k you get nothing ,so the best thing to do is load up your pensions or spend savings over 6k right ? then in the unfortunate position you lose your job you can depend on the state especially if you have a family .(income protection maybe ? how long does it last )
there is sarcasm in my last paragraph and i have just started jsa (contribution based) after a few months of self funding as i didn't want to pretend to be available when i am tossing it off in Polzeath (no not in that way)
anyway i think there should be an isa like vehicle that allows a savings drip feed over the years that is not included in benefit calculations.
or the NI you pay relates to the jsa you get, a percentage of your take home gradually reducing
do i have a point or do i need to ditch the Pinotage ?
should healthy savings equal self sufficiency ? even for a poorly paid worker?

Yes, healthy savings should equal self sufficiency. Benefits are a safety net to allow you to live while looking for work if you have no money or a very small amount of savings.

Self sufficency in the event of a job loss is one of the reasons people save

I didn't think JSA was still a thing, thought it was all UC these days. Hope you're fulfilling your weekly 35 hour job search.

so if a person in the same position had bought a new car ,loads of crap ect ,they do ?
Yep.That seems to be how the system works. Same if you save a small amount into a private pension, but enough so you miss out on all the pensioner benefits like free council tax, free rent etc etc etc...
Either save enough to be self sufficient, or don't save...

Your mortgage is all paid off and you seem to live pretty cheaply, maybe a small coffee shop job or something to keep you ticking over until retirement?
No idea on the state of the job market down there though, I assume it's quite seasonal and there's a lot of people competing for whatever vacancies there are.

So lemme get it straight - you don't wanna put the work in but you want more out?

yeah pretty accurate , i went to the signing on event today and they basically said we have nothing new ,i could probably last without work until retirement but rekon my mental health needs human contact ,i just find that playing by the rules can be frustrating sometimes when so many people don't , i will be ok when i sober up lol
