Insurance advics

Never ever had insurance on anything like this. It's so rare anything breaks.

Add in excess and it's just pointless imo.

If you don't need insurance, don't get it as (obviously) the house always wins.

Only exception for me is with pets as there is no limit to the bill. But for a washing machine? Most bill can be is cost of the machine.

Exactly, even if you're really that worried about it, spend a bit more on a higher quality machine which will probably have a longer warranty anyway

Hang on, are you actually talking about materials and rebuild? I know materials and labour have increased but that seems outrageous to me. I think my house rebuild cost has gone from 60k in 2009 to less than 120k now and I think even that is mental
120k seems very low to me, my recent refurb was almost 200 and this is a bog standard terraced house.

Or you can go the other way and buy something really cheap. Second hand stuff can be 50 quid or even free as sometimes people just want it gone.
Our washing machine was free. The previous owners wanted to sell it to us. We didn't want it. So they left it for free. It's still going 4 years later.

Bonkers to buy insurance for it now.

Plus, its not something i would have taken out even when brand new!

Hmm maybe I’ve recalled that wrong, I’d better check my policy but I do remember being shocked at how cheap a rebuild would have been all those years ago.

Managed to renovate my place for a tad under 40k when I bought it but I do have a lot of tradesmen friends. That was completely gutting the place and starting again. I don’t think I could afford it now!

I am probably over even with my 500k tbh but it's very hard to calculate as on private road with not the best access , I've altered the rebuild amounts in go compare and it's not much of a difference

Why would anyone buy insurance for white goods? They are basically disposable items after the manufacture’s warranty expires.

The only expectation to that would be if they were integrated into the fittings.

As it’s a PITA to refit them back into the fittings.

When my integrated hot point fridge freezer broke (caused my changing to a smart meter), obviously I called hot point as I didn’t know how old it was. They told me that it was just out of warranty and suggested I pay for this plan to get it fixed or replaced if they couldn’t fix it.

Two weeks and two repair man with two different sets of parts later and still no working fridge freezer. I was sick of eating takeaways!! I cancelled the plan, they haven’t changed me yet. When online and ordered a smeg integrated fridge freezer.. took me a good 2 hours to work out how to fit it back into the integrated space.. job done.

The options for upgrades on appliances tech and features increase yearly. They was options for frost free, air circulating, ice cube makers, special trays, internet connected.. just to name a few. I went for one that had limited features, the least to break and the most flexible.

If/when my washer dryer breaks, I’m going to try and replace it with two slimmer separate machines, as I have dead space on both sides at the moment.

The only insurance I buy is;
House insurance, as it’s a requirement of my mortgage.
Car insurance, as it’s a requirement of driving in this country.

I only have limited content insurance, I have dodgy neighbours that keep the street safe .

Car breakdown, travel, mobile/gadget and fraud insurance is done via my bank account.

Medical and income insurance is done via work scheme. I would hate to see how much a 3rd party insurance company would change to cover me in case I bail out raiding my mtb or get ran over when out jogging..

Anyone who hasn’t got medical or income insurance.. it’s worth looking into, just make sure that the income insurance covers your basic fix costs.. aka mortgage and house hold bills.

Well by coincidence just had a haggle and paid £140 buildings and contents, as said these seem to be default amounts

house insurance : also circa £100 , seems low but the liklihood of complete rebuild or even partial is low - I know of one person who had some kind of water inlet failure running beneath bungalow,
where they&contents moved out for 4 months for fix ... guess if you live in a flood zone though.

last Siemens washer from JL had 5 years parts&labour included ... but if it were 3 and 2 additional ones offered at £20 I'd probably go for it ;
drum bearing are the usual suspects, but the modern touch screens can become unresponsive.

We pay £120 for a family of 4 for medical with Vitality, so not a negligible amount, but not bank-breaking either.

The only other exception I'd consider is boiler cover, on the proviso it includes the annual service, although a lot of boilers have pretty long manufacturer warranties these days, so even then it's not necessarily worth it

JL is my favorite retailer, great customer services, extended warranties... did your siemens washer claim you was short on the float? lol..

It depends on bolier, mines just an electric boiler with a massive water tank, which seems to be rather large for a two up/two down. If and when the time comes I would rather replace it with someone smaller and cloud controlled, if possible intergate a central heating system into it as I have a separate cloud control electric heating system at the moment.

I guess it depends on how much value you place on your items to what insurance you take out. Friends are amazed that I don't have all my computer gear covered, I'm like why? I work from home, hardly go out in the evenings... most of them are work devices and if/when the time comes; I would rather just replace them myself with the cash saved from not buying insurance that have the debate on why I had so many devices in the first place; the standard of the replacement devices or the value that they need to give me to replace the devices.

My boiler is too old to insure.so.car.house and life (it was a condition of my mortgage, paid that off but kept as it's under a tenner a month for me and ex)
