Looking to upgrade my 5700x which I bought in June 2022 and my MSI B450 motherboard which I bought in September 2018. Would like a 7950X3D CPU an X670 based motherboard and 2x 32GB of 6000Mhz DDR5 Memory.

I know this type of build isn't what you'd normally recommend based on value for money vs performance. But can you give me some pointers as to which X670 motherboard I should choose and which RAM and CPU cooler.

Would prefer an AIR CPU cooler if possible but would consider water-cooling if necessary.

But can you give me some pointers as to which X670 motherboard I should choose
Things you need to choose:
- PCI-E 5.0 graphics?
- PCI-E 5.0 M.2/SSD? (& how many M.2 slots/SATA ports?)
- Integrated DAC/AMP?
- SPDIF?
- Wifi/BT? (and which version, e.g. does it need to be Wifi7)
- How many audio jacks?
- Minimum USB ports (and the type/speed)?
- DP over USB Type-C?
- USB4?
- Any extra PCI-E slots for other cards? (and if so, how large, e.g. do they need to have 4 lanes, 8 lanes?)

- PCI-E 5.0 graphics? YES
- PCI-E 5.0 M.2/SSD? (& how many M.2 slots/SATA ports?) As many as possible SATA ports not needed
- Integrated DAC/AMP? NO
- SPDIF? NO
- Wifi/BT? (and which version, e.g. does it need to be Wifi7) Not needed
- How many audio jacks? One would be fine
- Minimum USB ports (and the type/speed)? As many as possible USB Type-C preferred would like at least one USB Type-C header to front of case
- DP over USB Type-C? Not needed
- USB4? Yes please if possible
- Any extra PCI-E slots for other cards? (and if so, how large, e.g. do they need to have 4 lanes, 8 lanes?) As many as possible

This is the most expensive feature :D

I'd suggest the X670E ProArt Creator.

2x USB4 on the rear I/O.
4x M.2 slots, 2 are PCI-E 5.0, 2 are PCI-E 4.0.
10Gb LAN & 2.5Gb LAN.
7 rear USB Type-A Gen 3.2.
1 rear USB Type-C.
1 front USB Type-C with USB PD / fast charge.

2x full size PCI-E slots which can operate with 8 lanes (PCI-E 5.0).
1x full size PCI-E slot which can operate with 2 lanes.

If that board is too expensive, then I'd take a look at the TUF X670E-Plus.

Given your overall requirements I think you should also look at a Threadripper 7960X + TRX50 solution.

Thanks I've pulled the trigger on the...

AMD Ryzen™ 9 7950X3D
ASUS ProArt X670E-CREATOR WIFI
64GB (2x32GB) Corsair DDR5 Vengeance Grey, PC5-48000 (6000), Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 30, 1.4V, AMD EXPO
Noctua NH-D15S Dual Radiator Quiet Black CPU Cooler

Mainly wanted a new up to date motherboard as mine is over 5 years old and lacking many modern features, fancied some DDR5 as well and I've gone for 64GB. The 7950X3D will be a decent upgrade from 5700x.

Here's my shopping basket @ OcUK

This is excluding VAT as I'm in Jersey. A further 5% GST will be added by customs upon import to Jersey. So its £1290.40 in total.

I just put: "64GB DDR5" in the search box.
Here's my updated basket. With the better 2x 32GB and a bit cheaper too.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £1,220.62 (includes delivery: £28.99)

So with the 5% GST it will be £1281.65

Assembled my new system today, still have a few things to do but its up and running which is a relief. Its taken me about 7 hours so far today. Thought I had a RAM problem but it turns out enabling Memory Context Restore has solved it.

Was taking about a minute to train the memory, orange light for most of that then turns red, white then green and it boots. Now it boots pretty much instantly.

I had a nightmare trying to do a fresh install of Windows 11 off a bootable DVD, it was at the copying files from the DVD stage when it hung at 84%. So I had to revert to a backup and I was able to reactivate despite hardware change as "Windows is activated with a digital license linked to my Microsoft account."
