Road Cycling

24kmh avg is good. would say way above avaregy cyclist
i would be happy with that to be honest .

what cassette at the back and front you got ?
maybe consider bigger ?

seems u got it, and only overthinking :D

power curve is good as well

Haha i'm not sure i could go bigger, i've already got a 10-36! 48-35 up front

Although i need to try and update this in my Garmin as it has it saved as a 52-39 which messes up it's calcualtions for ratios, but the SRAM app doesn't seem to let me save it.

Definitely overthinking! I just need to get some more consistency and i'm sure i'll be fine.

Yep, just crack on and get time in the saddle. Only other things to do is sort out your pacing on the hills because thats quite a lot of elevation. Over 900m per 40km. Around here its pretty hilly and that would be a hill route for me over 40km. You have kind gearing for it but its still easy to burn those matches too early if you aren't careful.

Do you have a PM? Can you replicate some vague approximation of part of the route. ie. 60km route with 1500m of elevation?

The distance isn't what would worry me, its the elevation and even though my fitness isn't entirely awful at the moment, my recent rides outside have shown that my fitness on hills has fallen off a bit of a cliff during winter. Easy rides have quickly burned out my legs when I have gone too hard on a hill or two.

Yeah, i can probably find something. I've done a couple of test hills locally and can get around 1000m over 70km without much effort. The actual event has a climb of around 800m over 15km which is what's going to be a really challenge for me, so i need to try and replicate longer climbs over distance vs usual hilly routes providing the elevation evenly over undulating hills.

Yeah, i have a PM so hoping i can track improvements fairly well. There is always the option to drop down to the 80km event with 1700m elevation even during the actual event by a slight change of loop, so that's a handy option if i don't get to where i need to be.

At a training camp for the Tour 21 charity event I'm doing in 100days.

We did a route that included Calobra yesterday, with 120km and 2000m of riding.

Today is 170km with more elevation, I forget the route but can post later.

You can see my training on my JustGiving at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/thomas-roberts-tour21

I think I'm doing almost exactly that route next Saturday. We then have a longer, harder day on Sunday going up over Puig Major (in reverse this time). I can't wait, but 90 miles and 7,600 will be one of my biggest days yet.

Trying to prepare for longer rides. Are there any issues with a handlebar bag? I know they seem to be popular at the moment vs the more traditional saddle bags.

At the moment i don't even have a bag on the bike and am using the "pray i don't have issues" tactic which has mostly worked for me, the only time it hasn't i've been close enough to home to walk. I have a saddle bag which holds some spare tubes and a multi tool, but it's small and i wouldn't mind something bigger than could hold some food too.

those are handy on longer harder rides.
stuck carbs in it, some spare parts .
be hipster ;) look hipster ;)

Engagement ring for the new bike, wedding ring for the cycling holiday?
Smart man! lol

I was picking all the parts I'd like for my new bike yesterday. With a healthy bit of man-math here and there, it's not that bad of a number. To me. To the Ms-who-wishes-to-be-Mrs, it wasn't a good number :D

Never known someone to torture themselves quite like you :p

Just done the first ride of the Garmin Century plan. I was going to use the Gran Fondo one as @Calpol suggested but that only went to 75miles. I've put my event as the latest it allowed which was around the end of August. I figure that's just getting me to ride 100 miles by then though and i wonder if i should bring it forward to June, so i then get a couple months of doing 100 mile rides and time to really work on ascent too.

Either way, the training workout wasn't ideal. Apparently my "adherence" score was 43%. So hard to stick to power figures outside with wind and undulating terrain! Would be doing 190w, with therange being 230-270 and then suddenly it'd be reading 300, so try dropping off a bit and it drops to 180w! :(

What it did show though is that by FTP in Garmin probably was relatively correct at 280w, i manually dropped it to 240W, but there was an 8 minute Zone 4 section (216-252)and my HR barely got over 155bpm (bottom of Z3 HR), whereas i imagine HR and Power zones should be fairly linked?

Seems like it's just a mis balance between Cardio fitness and Leg Strength not quite being linked, but i might set it back to the Garmin suggested FTP and see how things go.

Haha, the truth is as much as I want a new bike. I very much love mine still. Yeah, Di2 and integrated cables and all that jazz would be lovely but I still look at my bike and think it looks nice and have great pleasure riding it!

My trainer is in the workshop getting repaired so I'm going to have to try and do a few of my sessions outdoors. I expect I'm going to find it significantly harder than when I can just watch Ted Lasso on the TV lol.

That sounds like exactly a reason to just get something like the 105 DI2 groupset someone posted on here for around £700 then? Maybe even ultegra for £1300 or so. Although i do question if someone like me or you would notice the difference.

No point spending crazy amounts if you'd be just as happy with your existing bike. Get all the components nailed, and then at some point it's "Just" a new frame because everything else is bang on.

I was wondering whether it was an aero faux pas, although with this fat lump in the saddle there's not much aero going on!
are you racing or enjoying ?
are you in aero shape while on the bike?
do you care what other say ?

no ?
then get the handle bar bag LOL
i had one in Alps twice , and small frame bag

Hey, i need all the help i can get on this thing. If that bag slows me down on the hills it might make all the difference and i might end up hurtling it over a cliff!
