Might buy the odd bike to spanner on in nice weather and sell. Not a job, just a little hobby now and then. Each bike I buy would then be registered to me and I'll be adding an owner to the bike's history. Is there a way to avoid this? I'm assuming I'd have to register as a trader?

Had some friends that used to do this on the side and unless things have changed they just used to fill in the trader section of the v5 make up a business name.

Pretty much, yes. You need to register as a motor trader and there's quite a few steps involved. Not sure it warrants the effort for buying a bike/car and selling every now and then.
