The problem with stuff like Intelligent Octopus can be seen by going to the FAQs on their website and scrolling down to the models of cars currently having issues. Because it is totally dependent on them working with each suppliers apps rather than being a general solution, it will also have problems with scalability and transferability. That said, I don't think the functionality that
@lordrobs is talking about would require new charging hardware, and I think stuff like Intelligent Octopus demonstrate why.
the future of intelligent octopus is probably by controlling the chargepoint not the cars..... that said, just because some cars have really crappy software built into them, that imo should fall on the car manufacturers sorting their mess out.
for instance, one of the cars (at least) to do internal battery checks and what not fires up the whole car using the 12v battery. this puts massive strain on the car battery when involved in intelligent charging as the car is polled at regular intervals........ however other cars manage to do it just by using a few watts from the battery and as such the strain on the 12v is nothing.
the issue with Jaguar and the ipace is apparently just a security issue, Jaguar used to allow 3rd parties access to their car now they dont, however that is not a software issue its a permissions issue and one would expect if it was deemed important enough an agreement would be made which would allow energy companies enough access to charge the car OR create an official jaguar approved app to allow this. I expect Jonnycoupe will know more details, no idea if he is allowed to share however.
but it wont be a flick of a switch and "dumb" chargers are not allowed to work any more anyway. that is just FUD with absolutlely no evidence to support it happening. i mean it is a technical possibility but every single service in the world could technically be blocked but it does not mean they will. I could just as easily say "any ICE car could be made obsolete because it will be illegal to fuel them". I mean its not impossible.......... but it isnt going to happen, they will just be phased out (at least until such a point as there are hardly any left)
What will happen is at some point all new chargepoints will be fully supporting of intelligent charging and so the percentage of those which cant will naturally fizzle out. Those which cant be controlled intelligently will have to be done manually..... and this will likely be done by having really expensive electricity at peak times... if you REALLY want to charge your car from 4pm to 7pm you can.......... but maybe you will be charged £1 a kwh. This will be much easier to do and will annoy less people when we all have either house batteries or bi directional charge points (something which can be done on type 2 chargepoints so no need for a new socket tho isnt really supported on them at the moment)
but if anyone is remotely worried about lack of intelligent charging being an issue then just buy an ohme pro or zappi (tho they dont support bi directional charging).
kraken (or similar) is the future of charging and Octopus are already licencing it out to anyone who wants it.
