Virgin Fiber or Hyperoptic?

hi all

I am currently with virgin and to summarise its been a up and down journey with them, six years now with them but getting tired of their prices I am paying compared to others. I just had Internet outage for 1 week so finally decided to leave and looking for another service provider. I cancelled my contract with virgin and then after 1 week they called me offering 1gig for £36 but hyperoptic are offering 1 gig for £40 and 3 months free. The issue is hyperopic is 900mb up and 900mb down where virgin is 1100 up and 100mb down.

my only issue is whether hyperoptic is a reliable service provider? Some say yes and some say no. I live in Central, Central London and worried about advertised speed might not be what I am going to get as they might be over suscribed. I don't expect 900/900 but I don't want 200/200 either.

anyone with hyperoptic?

I really wanted community fiber but its not available.

thanks all

I've not even read your post but the answer is Hyperoptic. The 500Mb service in N5 runs at 550Mbps all day and all night, never had any slowdowns. If you sign up through Uswitch then the prices are a bit better than their own site as well.

thank you gents for the feedback

I decided to try hyperoptic, and it will give me excuse finally redo my home network. Currently have a Unifi based network with 3AP with unifi swich. Will soon add a UDM-SE and UXG-Pro, might drop the UXG-Pro and go with dedicated pfsense if I can find a cheap enough 1u rack pc and and have the time to tinker with it.

thanks all

Bear in mind with Hyperoptic, you need to pay an extra £5 (I think) for a static IP, otherwise it's CGNAT. Not an issue for me and hasn't impacted on anything I use my connection for including gaming, but for others it can apparently break things.

How many times do you ever get near 1g now from sites? Virgin seems quite area specific so with you experiance why not try somthing else.

Hyperoptic in our 2 Glasgow offices albeit business accounts

2 years one single planned and well informed
Outage. Speeds are rock solid night and day

Virgin gig1 at home surprisingly a few minor jiggles but
Generally also has been rock solid for 3 years with what a single day of outage and a few router restarts required over that time

Did you end up going for the Hyperoptic package?

Definitely not Virgin Media. I'm not sure about Hyperoptic but I've been using Virgin Media as I have no other option for Fibre near me. Their support is awful and their prices are guaranteed to increase, every year even during your contract, this is written into their terms!

hyperoptic every day of the week and twice on sundays

we use hyperoptic (albeit business account but the same service and infrastructure) across 3 seperate sites i've had 1 planned outage in 2 1/2 years speeds are rocksolid up and down (circa 10% over quoted) cant comment on the customer support as we've never had to use it

Hyperoptic just went live in my area finally after God knows how many years. Got the line installed yesterday after negotiating a really good deal which saw them basically not charging me for the entire first year of my 2 year contract with them because I still had a year left with Virgin Media. And so far speeds have been absolutely fantastic and having 1gig UP as well as down Has been a game changer for cloud backups as well as the occasional streaming and youtube uploads.

Not to mention it's going to cost me half the price monthly than what I'm paying for Virgin at the moment. Hopefully the service continues as it's started, Virgin has basically had a stranglehold in my area for anything above 100mb, So its nice to finally have some competition.

Agree with this. I find their customer support atrocious.

Amazing how many people haven't noticed this was a bumped thread from over 7 months ago and are replying as though the op has waited with baited breath for an answer.
