Hi all. The latest bios has been released for the z790 motherboards with new intel settings which adresses the performance issues with 14th gen cpu's. Has any one tried it yet and if so what do you think.

Hey, yes I have just updated my BIOS to the current one (2301) for my 14900k. It sets the intel default profile and limits the PL1 and PL2 to 253Watts + ICCMAX to 307A.

I have looked at what the typical Cinebench r23 scores are for the 14900k unrestricted mode (around 38-40k multicore). I am getting 36.2K multicore but load temps never go beyond 77C. Previously my i7 13700k would easily hit 90c-95 with intense bench marking.

I'll take the stability and slight hit on performance over toasting my CPU. My max boost speed is 5.1Ghz when running multicore.... I don't know if that is normal or should I expect 5.6 across all the p cores.

hi mate, running a custom loop you should be able to have a nice overclock or undervolt without having to worry to much about temps

I am not worried, I set my voltages etc manually so dont have any worries. I was just interested to know if any one was using the new bios and what they thought ;)

I thought the intel PL1 spec was 125 watts , Not over double it

it is the base voltage for pl1....but int253 on both for some reason
No idea - you’re probably right. As you can see though, 253w for both according to the intel profile.

yes....125 is the base profile for pl1 but intel settings are 253. Having said that.....after seeing chaparral's comment I changed to 125 on pl1 and it still runs fine and even got a 1000 point boost on cinebench all though the temps did not drop but may as well leave it on 125 and see how it goes, less voltage is better I would think. :)

Nice! I might give that a go.

In terms of cinebench r23 I’m getting around 36.5k - does that seem right? I see varied scores for the 14900k (36-42k) but I think a lot of those scores are the old bios revisions with unlimited power and CPU’s running at 100C.

My temps are around 70-75C which I’m quite happy with. Been out of the pc game for a while and back in the day stock bios settings were considered safe and temps were always manageable.

I can't remember what i set mine too as i keep changing it when am bored :cry::cry:

Think i have mine set to something like PL1 200watt, PL2 295watt at the moment

here are some benchmarks results I have had using Benchmate, My cinebench scores is also around 36500

Just a side note, I have not used the new bios as I have no issues with the last bios update, I also undervolt the gpu so that may help with temps in side my case.

mine boosts as normal but the cooling helps, does you cpu throttle during benching
No i don’t think it throttles. My temps are pretty low. I see the power draw hit 253w and it’s almost like it just doesn’t have enough power to boost fully. If I give it more juice using the XTU utility it boosts higher. Playing Diablo 4 last night I saw consistent speeds of around 5.4ghz.

Wondering if it’s this latest bios update nerfing the speed.

Ah thanks for this. I see your cpu voltages are 1.2v, from memory (I’m out at the moment) my cpu is running at just over 1.0v - would need to check this. It’s definitely being held back though - 5.1ghz seems wrong to me. Would need another 14900k owner to verify though.

Right…. It appears that the new BIOS is seriously nerfing the performance of the 14900k. I have changed my settings back to ASUS optimised with multi core enhancement but set it the version that allows the cpu to reach a max of 90c.

The CPU is pulling a max of 310W. 1.245v under load. Now my score is around 40k.

What are the acceptable safe norms for this cpu in terms of oc settings? Is 310watts under full load ok long term? I’m bouncing off 90c under full load now with cinebench.

can you not now manually set pl1 and pl2 to 253w and see what that does?
I guess I could but it’s the same net effect as having the intel performance or extreme profile. Basically Intel have sold us a turkey here - I’ve reverted to default settings as anything above that is running out of spec and potentially unsafe.

i mean it’s still a fast cpu but nowhere near what Intel advertise. Additionally fine seems to set it multiplier to 57 and not 58 which is baffling and not the same as Intel specs…
