Depends what sort of phone it is, and more to the point what the other end of the "phone" socket connects to?

It sounds and looks like it's an IP based phone, so there is no traditional phone cabling involved, that is a standard RJ45 network cable, and the other end of the socket likely goes back into a PoE network switch.

Surely this phone has a model number, why are you giving us such little information?
I can't see any of this It's second hand info so I'm guessing, I'm just trying to help. The fact there was a delay when unplugging the phone makes me suspect thats not a normal phone line. I know I installed thousands.... VOIP <------ No idea, might as well be an Alien!

It's an IP phone by the looks of it. Model Ipecs lip-9030
So how do they get extra handsets to work with this if at all possible.

Nowhere near enough information to go on, sorry. If they need extra phones they need to speak to the provider and order more.

We're still nowhere closer to having an idea of what you actually want to achieve. I'm going to have a guess that you're getting towards "extension sockets" on an IP phone, which isn't an option.

I'm just asking how to add further phones without having to call the Phone line/Broadband supplier. It seems they have an IP besed system.
The phone Model is Ipecs lip-9030, The company that supply the Phone/BB is Vadtel. It's either yes or no, it can't be done

You can add handsets but your provider needs to set them up for you. If the contract that exists with the supplier is that you pay x per month per handset then there will be a cost attached. You can't add a phone without them being involved.

Ok thanks thats all I needed to know.

Never heard of Vadtel and been in the telecoms business for almost 20 years. Googling them doesnt instil any confidence either, google say they are permanently closed and their actual website is unsecure. Handset model is an LG-Ericsson which is a surprise as again never supplied one with VoiP in a decade of supplying VoiP - 90% Poly 10% Yealink.

As other have said most VoIP providers require a licenced (paid) user for each handset you want, but Gamma do offer a service that allows you to have multiple telephones on one VoiP number, but only one can be used, so if you are on a call a second handset cant ring out and wont receive a call (so basically exactly like old PSTN lines). Pretty cheap as well at about £6 a month (I think, I try to avoid having to deal with money at work :)) - Phoneline + its called.
