Hi,

I've been googling and searching for the last while for ideas and this forum always pops up so I figured I'd finally make use of my account!

Decided to mount my TV on the chimney breast (3 cats who like to use everything as a launchpad, plus it is far too expensive to remove the chimney breast!) and after the fireplace was removed, make use of all the loose bits of MDF and worktop etc I have lying around to build some simple floating shelves for the old recess after getting it cleaned up and plastered.

Of course, the fun bit now is how am I going to run the cables from the TV down to the old recess! The previous owner had wired an extension lead up high enough for me to plug in the TV so I don't need to worry about running electrical leads or anything down (most likely a few HDMI for consoles and settop box, maybe ethernet as well), and the previous owner also had an electric fireplace, so there is wiring inside the recess (which I plan on converting to at least a double socket if I can ever get hold of a spark!). I'm not 100% sure what way the wall is made up, but from looking up in the recess the front looks to be solid, with no gaps to drop cables down.

What I was thinking could work, is either
- chase the left side of the wall right down to the floor, and across to the opening (the blue lines), and add a 40mm backbox where the channels meet (the black lines) and have a 'false' front under the bottom shelf, say 5cm off the floor to run all the cables under and hide them
- chase the middle of the wall down to the recess opening (the green lines), and inside the recess just have some trunking stuck to the wall - maybe not the prettiest, but it might be the easiest way to get at any cables, and probably won't notice it once it's all painted (thinking I could add some trim along the outside of the opening as well to hide it?)

Any advice, tips or comments are much appreciated! :D

I'm guessing from this you are wanting to install the AVC equipment etc into the fireplace recess (i.e. cables go from the TV to the recess).

Assuming you can still access up the the flue I'd consider drilling a hole directly behind the TV into the flue, fitting a brushplate single gang box then dropping the cables down the flue. Can then just build a false stud wall at the back of the fireplace and fit the sockets to it.

This was what I was considering doing - didn’t think of the fake backing though which is a great idea :D the one builder who came out to look said it could end up very messy (although I don’t think the fireplace was ever used with gas - the gas engineer even commented that the old pipe had never been touched, just connected to the mains and switched off) and might cause problems if I was ever looking to sell as the flue would need repaired

I managed to get a look inside the flue and it looks like I could fit some flexible conduit or piping in - chimney has a cowl but not completely blocked so I’d be afraid of some condensation breaking something!
