Painting the rear external door

What's people opinions on door fixture and fittings? You'll see in the pictures I posted earlier that the handles and escutcheons are brass, and are tarnished. The other half wants to replace with brass but in my opinion it's old fashioned and tarnishes faster than say chrome plated?

Nice work!

I would go satin chrome for door fittings myself. I agree that brass is a bit old fashioned. Satin chrome can stay looking good for longer than polished chrome. However, remember happy wife happy life lol :D

Surely that's a replacement door? :D

Looks great

It did occur to me part way through the copious amounts of sanding that buying a new door would be a lot less hassle.

Trying to get into the nooks and crannies of the recessed panels and corners of the joints was difficult, but I would recommend the Dremel 516 bit. A steady hand and not too much force did a good job without taking away any wood.

To be fair, she seemed onboard with satin chrome so I think that could be a half way house.

Bit late, but where possible it can be a much easier job to take the door off and lay on trestles or similar and do the stripping, sanding and quick drying paint layers inside or out in the garden.
I do all internal doors this way and did the back door the same, until we changed it for a composite door.

That's exactly what we did, it worked nicely in terms of getting around the door but it being out in the open and horizontal seemed to attract bugs. The primer coat didn't dry at all even after 8hrs and the door was off its hinges, so had to put it back and essentially get finger marks in the undercoat.

I have no idea why it didn't dry, we had it in the garage with the garage door open because it did start to rain. It wasn't cold, so I can only assume there was too much humidity. I just sanded the finger marks back, re-primed those areas and it was all good.
