WEED KILLER

I use that, but not anywhere near grass or anything else I'd like to keep.
There's nothing it won't kill.
It won't kill plenty of things actually. For most other things you need Triclopyr.
I regularly mix that and Glyphosate together to get everything.

Triclopyr is actually safe to use on grass.

i believe that is because glyphosate is very poor at absorbing through waxy type leaves but triclopyr does absorb well

I used it on Periwinkle which had taken over half the garden, and it did a great job.
Hopefully it’ll be the last time I need to use it.

As said above, stuff with glyphosate in (e.g. Gallup) will kill everything green including the grass. It can scorch or kill trees too.
Stuff with "2,4-D" will kill broadleaf plants but shouldn't kill grasses.
You may want to review the safety and toxicity reports on these herbicide before you cover your lawn in them though.

Most of the named pre-mixed weedkillers have removed glyphosate now and are using something which is far less effective.

However you can get get 5l of the good neat 490g/l stuff from here for a decent price and as you only need 12ml per litre when you mix it, 5 litres will last years and it works out far cheaper than the pre-mix used to be.

You mean it keeps them short ;)
Yes I suppose it does :)

At a casual glance the lawns look fine, but don't inspect them closely!

My thinking is that regular mowing stops the weeds completing their life cycle and spreading, though I could be completely wrong.

To indicate my level of gardening expertise, I nearly managed to accidentally kill a Budlea :)

It's been the same for ages. They get safer, but safer to the weeds as well.
I've had my 5l of Gallup for about 10 years now.

Same with slug pellets, luckily I’ve still got a tub of the OG stuff that I use very sparingly.
I do understand why they banned them though.

It is effective if you have loads of weeds in your lawn. I don’t use it because I want to preserve the clover.

Weedkillers are generally grouped into 3 categories - Broadleaf, Narrow leaf (grasses) and Total Coverage.

As clover is a Broadleaf, I am not sure if there is a weedkiller out there that will kill other weeds (which are generally Broadleaf) while leaving the clover alone unfortunately.

You could try mixing in a wetting agent to help absorption. May have limited effect but worth a try.

Yes, mostly things like marestail I get loads in my garden.

You'll have a hard time getting rid of mares tail... Their roots can be upto 2m deep and their structure makes it hard for weedkiller to be absorbed :(

I used Weedol fast acting stuff all over the garden a few months ago, on all sorts of weeds. Not a single one died, utterly useless. A few leaves that got directly sprayed went slightly brown around the edges, I suspect it's acidic for that 'fast acting' effect.

This stuff (don't buy it)
Weedol 019423 Fast Acting Weedkiller, Ready to Use, Manual Spray 3 Litre, Clear https://amzn.eu/d/057qIJS9

Triclopyr deals with it for the most part. I just spray and forget about it. I should keep at it as soon as I see it really.
