My grandson has an old system based on a Core I5 6400 inherited from me with 12GB of DDR4 memory and a Radeon RX580 graphics card.

Power supply is well rated but needs a new case.

He needs an upgrade.

I have a Ryzen 3600 / and a freezer 7X cooler.

Is it a worthwhile / possible exercise to upgrade his kit with existing:
- 3600 CPU and cooler
- DDR 4 memory
- power supply
- RX 580 (NOT 5800!)

and adding:
- a new case
- a new motherboard - say a B550 Tomahawk?

and then at future birthdays etc, upgrading the CPU / graphics card?

Any knowledge out there please?
Thanks, Mel

A 3600 is a decent upgrade from the i5-6400, especially for newer games that struggle on 4 core/4 thread CPUs, but I'd obviously be careful how much you spend on the board or it won't be cheap anymore.

Assuming you mean a RX 580, there are plenty of upgrades available for that, when you have the money.

Thanks - yes an RX580
RE memory = on the "Battle Hard" box (it was a "Maplin" motherboard / CPU / memory "kit") it says memory speed "2400 MHz".

Thanks, Mel

3200 MHz memory will give you approx 10% more performance so you will have decide if it's worth getting faster memory.

12gb of memory, is 8gb and 4gb or 3x4gb ?

Selling your old intel parts should ease the cost.

Could also put a add in the wanted section of the members market for a suitable motherboard.

Will look out for items on MM - think I would rather go for a new MB and perhaps "pre-loved" memory after we have it working?
