Cooler Master’s Fanless 850W power supply supports GeForce RTX 5090

Don't think I've ever had a PSU fan failure, or so rare I've forgotten and for some years now my PSUs have run passive up to a point and only audible if you are really pushing them to the max or have your ear right up beside them.

For $500 dollars (which will translate into £500) it should be lifetime, it's a ridiculous price. I paid £119 for my 2021 Corsair RM 850x and have never heard the fan at all and it has no coil whine. There is no need to spend silly amounts like that.

Does seem strange... Aside from proof of concept that they can acualy make a fairly powerful passive PSU...

Almost all decent PSUs these days have zero fan mode and active fan speed control when they do spin.

Fact is if your working a PSU hard enough to spin the fan up, you can bet your gpu and/or cpu fan is gonna be spinning louder if your pulling say 600w of power or more...

It's difficult to to imagine a scenario where a fully passive PSU is really needed... Especially given the cost. Unless it's a low power pc with on board graphics etc. And you want it as silent as possible.

I mean if it wasn't much more expensive than an equivalent good quality PSU, then sure why not...

But if I'm doing a new build I'd rather allocate and extra £300 or so to a better cpu and gpu or a better monitor or whatever.

500 is crazy for a PSU which is only outputting 850w.. even the Asus 1600w is like £600.. beside being fanless what makes it so special

Well, not a lot really, but a fanless 850w PSU is quite an achievement, especially with the long warranty.
That's assuming it will hold up against equivalent units, the likes of seasonic and corsair 850w units with active fan modes...which don't cost much more than a hundred quid!

I guess we will have to wait for real world testing from the usual suspects.

I suspect this passive model is more a proof of concept that 'it can be done' as opposed to the sort of PSU 99% of people will normally buy.

I mean you could buy something like this and use the money saved to buy better components elsewhere in your system.

true and well don't most PSU now-a-days have a passive fan, where theyy don't start up till it reaches a certain temperature etc.

I remmber some of mine had never activated apart from the initial start up, even when gaming..

Seems like a pointless concept. The PSU is 99% always hidden and there will always be at least one fan in the case, which generally will be louder than all the other parts.. so it kinda makes no sense to me.
 
Well, indeed, most modern PSU won't even turn the fan on untill about 30% load, which for an 850w PSU would be around 250w... and even then they have active fan speed controls so they will only spin slow and quietly.

By the time you load up the PSU properly, your GPU/CPU fans are gonna be louder than that, so you won't hear the PSU fan anyway.

The sentiment of having less required fans in a system has to be applauded as a general rule. But even as someone who likes a quiet system, I couldn't justify putting that sort of money down for a power supply.
 
It's a great feat of techology, but it's also a £500 850w PSU.. I wonder who the OEM is... I don't think cooler master make PSU's in house...? I might be very wrong.

It will be really interesting to see some real reviews on it.
