Things that make you go hmmmmmmmmm

Interesting insight into cost cutting in exterior panels&design of cars - hmmm, what my eye hadn't seen

We discovered the cost cutting Vauxhall did on our previous van (2007 Vivaro) but on the internal skin panels. The spare wheel was mounted internally above the offside rear wheel arch. After a few years of driving the bracket tore through the panel.

We were told it was because they changed to a thinner skin sheet to save money but did properly re-spec anything else. No idea what the repair and reinforcement cost, as they had to deal with it.

Same van also had an issue with the radiator fan rubbing on the coolant pipe until it cut through. It failed going through the big cat enclosure at Longleat.

Probably not for quite the same reason, but years ago when my uncle died I inherited his old Mondeo. It quick quickly developed some weird electrical issue. Turns out, the loom had been rubbing against some metal in the dashboard. It eventuall broke through and shorted itself. Great.

Not overly surprised to see it was a Mondeo. My last car before my son qualified for Motability was a Mondeo, the pre-facelift round headlight one with the massive hatchback. That died of unknown electrical issues just as we were waiting for his first scheme car. Wasn't worth the cost of finding out what was wrong.
