Hi,

Im looking to build a gaming rig for 1440p gaming putting out 60fps to 120fps (i want more than 1080p and 4k just to expensive)

Hoping to play latest games and older stuff 5/6 years old.

I want to do this on the cheap so hoping to go with the members market and get second hand components.

What components should be on my list to look out for on the members market ?

What CPU and graphics card will do 1440p that are 1/2 years old ?

Thanks Ben

Do you have a PC at the moment? (list the specs if so) Could look at upgrading that or suggesting 2nd hand parts.

Do you have the monitor? Is it GSYNC\FREESYNC? as this would impact the gpu needed or list the monitor model number if you have 1 in mind but not bought it yet

My current PC was built in 2013 so dont think theres anything left in it would rather build a new one from second hand parts.

I will be purchasing a second hand 32" 1440p monitor witht he build.

Ok, are you going to be using storage\PSU\Case from the previous system and just buy a CPU\Mobo\Ram?

Do you have a budget in mind?

What GPU do you currently have?

Budget no more than £1000 for all second hand components. (maybe a tad more to get monitor aswell)

Looking online and reading the 6800 XT might be a good option for the graphics.

The current storage is only a 500GB Samsung SSD 860 EVO SATA drive, had it about 5 years. Surely to slow now ? was thinking NVME drive second hand.

in general, you'd be looking for:

cpu: ryzen 7600 or intel 12600(k) or better
mobo: a ddr5 based mobo (the intels come in ddr 4 and ddr 5 flavours - you'd want the ddr 5), for amd - b650 is sufficient, you don't need the x670, for intel - if you get a -k cpu then the z690/z790 else b660/b760 is sufficient
ram: 32gb ddr 5 at 6000mt/s
gpu: radeon 6800xt/7800xt, rtx 3080/4070 or better
ssd: at least 1tb gen 4 ssd (ideally with a dram cache but not essential)
psu: reputable 650w, ideally 750w if going with any intel, any radeon or the 3080
cooler: just buy this new - thermalright phantom spirit or peerless assassin (whichever is cheaper on the day) if you want a standard heatsink, or if aio thermalright frozen prism 240mm or 360mm (if going the intel route definitely opt for the 360mm)

PS: i would also not be looking to spend £1k on these used parts...you can get a full new build for £1k lol

What's your budget? A 3070 is a reasonable cheaper option (£260), but I'm not convinced you'll get 120 fps+ at 1440p without dlss. A 6800xt would be the next teir up - you'll need to look at recent benchmarks to see how it compares to a 10gb 3080 though.

Thanks for all the replies and information.

Now i've got some model numbers i can search for prices.

I'm liking this combo at the moment, Ryzen 7 5800X3D and AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT.

Can see a 6800 XT for £330 near me used at the moment and a 5800X3D for £220.
