Finally time to upgrade my 980 Ti to midrange current GPU.

Just want to say thanks again for all the information and advice although unfortunately I didn't find a good deal in the sales.
I realise now that it's too close to the 8000/5000 releases to spend serious money but will be keeping an eye out for a second hand 7x00 XT or 4070 going cheap so at least I'll be able to play Cyberpunk at ok settings.
In 4-6 months once everything has calmed down and prices/supply have stabilised I'll look into a complete PC upgrade and get something for the long term again.

I really enjoy doing all the research into upgrading but damn is it time consuming.:)

Cheers.

I know it's above your budget, but I too only just moved from a 980ti. Purchased at launch in 2015 for £500 and it served me well for 9 years. Adjusting for inflation that's £675 today according to the BOE inflation calc.

It doesn't make the sums any easier, but knowing that a 4070 ti super can be had new for £700 it felt like it stung less, and 3 years 0% didn't hurt either. The plan is for it to last as long as the 980ti.

I don't really have a budget, not saying I'm rich just don't have kids. :D

If it wasn't for my 9 year old CPU and being so close to the new card releases I would definitely have bought a 4070 Ti Super and been happy for another 9 years.
I don't mind spending money but I have an almost genetic imperative to get the most for my money and from the advice people have given here, barring any amazing one off deals, now is not quite the best time for that.

I think I started my search a month or two late.

Cheers.

The RX7800XT has been frequently under £400 in the last few weeks. AMD dGPUs still seem to do a bit better on older CPUs in DX12 games AFAIK.

Thanks,
Yeah I saw in the price history that some were as low as £382.50 in Sept. and Oct. but when I actually went to buy I couldn't find one under £450ish in stock.
Just too much of a difference for me to stomach.

During Black Friday week you could get one for under £400. Keep a look out on some of the deal websites.

I won't ask you where from, site rules and all, but I honestly couldn't find one at that price on any of the price comparison sites I used.
Disappointed I missed it, would have good to have one during my Christmas time off.

Felt the need to say thank you yet again and let you know the time you took to reply was not wasted.
I managed to get a Sapphire RX 7800 XT Nitro+ from Overclockers.
Although it's B-grade I got it for a price which not only takes into account the shorter warranty but also means if next years new cards are amazing and I have to have one, I can sell this one on without loosing too much money, as long as it doesn't go pop at 6 months and 1 day.:)

It's been very interesting to actually see it's performance with the i7-5930k.
Before removing the 980 Ti I ran Cyberpunk's benchmark and was quite surprised to see that FSR worked with the 980 Ti and that at Balanced it allowed me to run CP in 1440p at above 50fps with medium and a few high settings, looked and played reasonable well.
Installed the 7800 XT and with the 5930K running at stock 3.5Ghz and RAM at 2400Mhz, would occasionally dip below 60fps at native 1440p ultra.
Clocking to 4.5Ghz/3200Mhz pegged it at 60fps (Vsync on), looked and played amazing on my 32" AMVA panel.
I did get a single crash but rather than keep tweaking the voltages I just backed the RAM down to 2666Mhz at it's been completely stable with no noticeable difference in performance.
Very happy.

Started to think I wouldn't find a GPU this side of the holidays, not at a price I was comfortable with.
Tis truly a Christmas miracle!
Happy holidays one and all!:D

I am waiting for the 7800XT's replacement, the AMD 8800 XT before I upgrade from my Nvidia RTX 3070. Before then I also had the 980 Ti, an MSI one. It was a great card and I miss it. But, we all have to move on with GPU's.

I need a GPU with at least 16 gig of VRAM and right now AMD offers the best value for that. Not Nvidia, not at all. Looking at you RTX 4070Ti, for a rip-off £800.00!

After waiting 9 years you'd think waiting a few months more wouldn't be a problem but I got too impatient:), also the price I got the card for was just too good to pass up.

Part of the reason I haven't upgraded till now is because I don't tend to play any brand new AAA games that push the GPU so haven't really needed to.

But the main reason was on principle.
While I accept that the price of components and raw materials has gone up considerably over the past 9 years, I don't accept they justify a 400% increase, so I chose to protest by not buying.
I think Nvidia will be feeling the full financial effect of my protest by now and will be forced to drastically lower the prices for their new cards.
You're welcome gamers.

Sorry for the delayed reply, I must have missed the new post notification.

The card out of the box is great with no coil whine.
I always set fans to minimum 20% with a steep ramp-up for safety/lifespan and I can't hear them above the noise of the CPU water pump unless high GPU load.
The RGB implementation is actually pretty cool, a kind of screen effect but I turned it off when the novelty wore off.

Temps were higher than my 980ti but from what I read normal for the card.
With some mild undervolting the card doesn't break 70° at 100%.

I've not had any issues with card compatibility or driver stability though not tested a lot of games, been no-lifing Cyberpunk.

Briefly tested The Witcher 3 with visual improvement mods, it ran flawlessly at 4k/60hz and looked amazing, made me want to get back into it and actually finish the game.
The only other newish game I've played is Destroyer: The U-Boat Hunter but I doubt it's be much of a test, ran fine anyway.

Had an odd thing happen with Cyberpunk which I guess is because of my ageing CPU bottlenecking the GPU.
In very busy areas of the city I noticed the frames dip to 50fps but the GPU and CPU were only running at 70%ish.
Just found it odd that the CPU wasn't maxed if it was holding the GPU back.
After more investigation it seems that this is normal behaviour for a CPU bottleneck.

Overall very happy with it.
