hi all,

ive been building my own pcs since ive had the money to buy the parts myself

im 43 now and tbh ive fell out of touch with whats what

most upgrades ive done have been in the essential category with the biggest ive ever upgraded at once being my current mobo and cpu with few gfx cards along the way and since the cpu was launched in 2015, its been at least 7-8 years since i upgraded because it def would not have been bought when it came out

current system

cpu: intel i5 6500 lga 1151
mobo: gigabyte h170 d3hp
ram: 16gb corsair ddr4
gfx: geforce gtx 970
power supply: evga supernova nex750g
storage: 1 ssd and a **** tonne of hdds(okay like 5 but still)
cpu cooler says arctic freezer 7 pro rev 2 on the sticker
case: corsair obsidian series 750d airflow edition full atx

right now im thinking the end of the tax year is on the way and the bug for getting shineys has kicked in

so heres what im thinking atm
My basket at OcUK:

total for that atm is £1448 but since i prob wont be buying till feb/march anyway i expect that to go up so im not too worried if the total of any suggestions gets to like £1700-£1800

im ok with keeping the case, its not fancy but im fairly sure its big enough for what im thinking of putting in it

my questions about the build im thinking of are,

the cpu cooler? a quick google search said its not compatible with lga 1700 so ill probably need a new one of those, i dont think im confident enough for a water cooled build nor do i plan to overclock it to within an inch of its life, some overclocking sure but not to the extreme

the power supply again a quick google says it has mb power, 3 sata slots, 1 perif(6 pin like sata), 4 vga slots and two cpu slots, is that sufficient for a newer build or does that need upgrading too?

the reason im wondering thsi now(this early) is some of the mobos in ocuk are saying pre order, so if i have to pre order the mobo now and then the rest when it comes time to buy then the extra time posting now affords me will allow that

the mobo, tbh i like the back plate layout of the pro x but i think i rememer seeing a video on youtube saying about pcie 5.0 for the gfx card being interfered with by running a ssd in the top slot? was i imagining that or does it actually happen and if it does happen is it a big deal

i dont really play too many fps games and while the 4060 is probably overkill for the games i would play i wouldnt want it to be bottlenecked if i decide to put an ssd in the fastest slot

and a general question about ssd's, would it be better to get a smaller say 250/500gb one to run the os separetely from games storage or is the throughput not ata point where it probably dosant matter

ive always been a gigabyte /intel/seagate guy but the almighty £ rules all so if a parts suggestion comes my way where i can have my shineys and keep some gbp in my pocket then all will be welcome

if youve sat this long reading this, i appreciate it

thank you kindly

What exactly do you use the PC for, is it just gaming and if so what games in particular?

What resolution and refresh rate is your monitor?

gaming/browsing no rendering or anything like that

games wise, path of exile 2, some fallouts, the witcher series gets a play through occasionally, skyrim, star wars empire at war, kerbal space program 1+2, star trek online, no mans sky

no really intensive first person shooters

dual monitors resolution 1080 refresh rate of both 60hz

my recommendation is not to split it and sell the lot as-is, there's nothing worth to reuse, so just get a whole new rig

that's a terrible build if it's mainly for games.
tbh a £1100-1200 should be fine. you don't need to overspend

hahah, thanks

thats exactly why i asked
not a fan of the white case, easily enough sorted, thanks for the input, i might actually consider getting the gfx card sooner rather than later im not sure how long any offers would last and 200 off is a good deal

i never even considered spending almost half the budget on a gfx card though, thanks
The above is vastly superior for the money.

I'd be tempted to spend the extra on the 9600X:

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £233.99 (includes delivery: £3.99)

It's not a night and day difference (5-10% at most last I checked), but for the sake of under £50 I'd take a punt.
yeah definitely worth considering, thanks for the options

Prices fluctuate on individual components a lot, you're best off coming back when you're ready to buy and someone can help you put together the best possible list at that specific time.

The 7900XT's have been at around £600 for months now and that doesn't look to change, even if that particular model isn't on sale another comparable one very probably will be.

I'd also seriously consider upgrading your monitor(s) from 1080p/60hz while you're at it, you mentioned having a potential budget of up to £1800 and you'd see a massive difference even on a sub £150 1440P screen with higher refresh and freesync.

The joys of computing!

Good quality gaming screens are surprisingly affordable right now tbh, I'd not stress about it too much, but you will benefit hugely given the age of your current monitors.
