MinisForum MS-01/AX/XX - Owners Thread

Right, it's back up now, looks like it has done the following on mine:
  • Cleared UEFI settings
  • Cleared Intel VMT configuration (Not the array itself, just the config on the controller)
  • Cleared Intel AMT configuration
  • Reset vTPM contents

That's a lucky escape with these units as I've found they can be quite sensitive when it comes to static etc from posts on other places where the unit can built up a charge over time which causes it not to turn on.

Not had that yet on mine but still "unnerving" :)

Update is complete on mine now for the UEFI and X710, after getting my settings back in the unit boot up temp seems to have dropped by 5-7c. Could be a fluke but something worth noting.

I'll leave the other two till tomorrow so I can see if anything interesting happens this evening thought I doubt it will decide to do anything spectacular :D

That's a good drop. My i5 runs at 20 according to the pf sensors. What is the temp reported at?

Mine's a heck of a lot hotter than 20 :D

So mine are located in two different areas, one in the office, one in the network cupboard

Office (1.22 BIOS):
Package 40c avg (36 low 47 peak)
P-Core 39c avg (36 low 45 peak)
E-Core 37c avg (35 low 43 peak)

Network cabinet (1.26 BIOS):
Package 46c avg (44 low 68 peak)
P-Core 42c avg (39 low 67 peak)
E-Core 40c avg (39 low 59 peak)

For both units turbo is off and they are configured in max performance without turbo, I've also lowered the power down to 45000 (Limit 1) and 60000 (Limit 2) with CPU utilisation capped at 97% in Windows to stop the random turbo boost spikes

Whilst the network cabinet one is hotter it's in a cupboard with limited ventilation and its about 5-10c hotter so it's not doing too bad all things considered

Sweet jesus!

Mine doesn't have that through put however two of the units are host to 7 VMs each with the one in the network cabinet hosting 2 VMs, one of which gets around 1 - 2.5 Gbit/s sustained for 30 mins ish when doing backups daily :)

We had an ISP that was going to offer 10 Gbit/s near us however they went bust before they completed their roll out (I'm hoping the people who've bought them press ahead) as the max we can get it 1.65 Gbit/s which to be fair me and the mrs barely touch the sides off unless we are rebuilding our systems :D

Tbh I had the 8gb on trial... meh. For what we do there was no noticeable difference between 2gb/2gb and the 8gb. I just really wanted to see if my lan, switch and self installed wiring could handle it. Which it can so if they drop the price by £20 pcm or somewhere round there I'm in... :cry:
 
I almost pulled the trigger on a Ms-01 late last year as a new homelab server. Good to see a thread herem, how are people finding noise and thermals?

I plan to run ~10 VM's using wither proxmox or hyperv.
 
No issues with noise personally. I find it pretty quiet. I did add an additional fan on top of the case only because I have a 10gb rj45 nic bring used alongside the sfp ports. It's only on low speed but not had any issues with heat problems. I did replace the thermal paste on both of my it's.

No issues with noise here however I have them in seperate rooms from where I sleep and watch TV. Working next to it is fine as they are fairly quiet.

Thermalwise they run a little hotter than I'd like however providing you re-paste them and drop CPU utilisation to 97% max with no turbo they run relatively cool :)
 
Thanks guys. I’ll be running it next to my desk but it won’t be constantly utilised so sounds like it will be quiet enough not to bother me.

You may want to hang fire for just a smidge as the MS-A2 has been unveiled at CES which could be cheaper.

Unlike the A1 the A2 still has the 10G SFP ports and two 2.5 Gbit/s NICs however it will consume a bit more power for a bit more CPU performance

Other bit would be buy the SSD and RAM yourself as it will be a fair bit cheaper than buying it from them bundled with the unit :)
 
Undecided on getting one of these (and/or hanging on for the A2 though I'm trying to find a good compromise between low idle power use and lots of cores). Want something to stick in a 10" rack to replace the system I use currently for running some game servers and light VM use as my current solution is getting a bit old now and doesn't need to be using as much power or taking up as much space.

But seeing some very mixed reports on the reliability of the MS-01.

I have three of them which have all been fine after re-applying the thermal paste however I agree that I would be cautious when ordering and Minisforum seem to have a bit of a lacking attitude when it comes to the units which don't work (Seen some less than pleasing reports regarding the returns process)

Personally I think with the release of the A2 comming soon I would hang fire if you aren't bothered about Thunderbolt based networking as if anything the newer A2 units may be slightly cheaper than the MS-01s

Well, unless the MS-01s have a price drop, if you can pick them up unpopulated for £300ish for the i5 unit I would go for one at that price, I wouldn't buy the i9s as thermally they seem to have some problems.

The other bit is if this is going to be in a 10" rack make sure you have active cooling ready as they do get warm, especially if you are using any add-in cards :)
