Extended Laptop Warranty Yay Or Nay?

Recently purchased a MSI GE78 Raider laptop with a Core i9 1390hx, 16GB DDR5 5600MHz, RTX4070 which has come with a 27 month warranty as standard.

I have been offered the official MSI extended 2 year warranty for £200, which would take the total warranty to 4 years and 3 months. I intend to change the laptop after 5 years for a new one.

The question is should I take the warranty or not? Any thoughts? My last MSI gaming laptop lasted 10 years, so I am in two minds....

Thanks

Depends really

I would not normally take out extended warrenty, however, this morning, im glad i have some form of warrenty! the dell laptop i purchased used but in excellent condition, still has a dell warrenty on it until oct 2025 but i think this is the standard warrenty not extended.

They are coming out tomorrow to replace the mainboard as the USB-C charge ports or something going on from the motherboard perspective which is stopping it from charging, so in this instance its good

Depends if you think you would need the normal warrenty extended.

Extended warranties are really up to you person buying them.

I don't get the extended warranty for anything I buy but that's a risk I'm happy with and I'll often buy used anyway so I don't really care.

My general thought on extended warranties is that - they are only offered at the price they are because the supplier makes a profit from them. Thus there is a massive weighting in their favour and the most likely outcome is that you pay more for the warranty that you otherwise would for repairs.

Therefore, on the balance of probabilities, you are better keeping the money yourself.

The only real exception is where you can afford the warranty but wouldn't be able to afford repairs if the worst happened. In which case the cost for peace of mind makes some sense.

I think it depends on your usage. If it's your primary machine and you're using it all the time I'd be tempted with the warranty. As said above, most warranties are priced to make a profit. If you're using the laptop in a way that it has an above average chance of failure or you don't have a fallback device to use it would be worth it.

Exactly my thoughts on the matter.

Another option is check how much it costs to add it to your house insurance for accidental damage, or damage when out and about.

If its less, just do that, and if the laptop breaks down, it also accicentally gets dropped onto a stone tile floor. ;)

Used to work for a well known IT and stationery retailer. Staff would be under massive pressure to offer warranties even for items which did not benefit from having one, such as a cheap inkjet. Made all the worse by the fact that it's possible to purchase a warranty separate from the retailer you purchased your item from. Mattyfex makes an interesting point about home insurance. I remember the manager during a staff meeting claiming this was not possible! Thus lying in order to get his staff to do likewise.

thats comon in retail sadly :/

i think the first question is how much is the laptop? if its up to 400 i'd say no. 400-800 maybe, 800+ yes
but it depends on further things like
company reputtion
reviews
and knowlege of the comany / products / models
the industry you work in
and your personal expirence with the pruduct
does the warranty come with accidental damage cover?

also depends on how much the warranty is.

in this instance i think it would fall under the yes category.the cist your aying for the laptop vs the warrnty cost make it compelling. in addition if you want to sell laptop later and early it could still have some warranty which would help sell it on.
