What 2025 titles will *need* a 5000 series gpu?

When I first started pc gaming(too many years ago) there were certain titles that needed a next gen gpu to play. I’m talking, wing commander 3, unreal tournament doom eternal, and Crysis to name a few. My 3080 is nearing 5 years old and still runs the modern stuff well at 4k with the settings near or at max.

So. What are the titles that are due out, say first half of the year that will make you upgrade?

5000 needs some games, not the other way around, is my perspective.

Stalker 2 is demanding and fits the topic, but it hasn't made me upgrade. I barely even look in the Stalker thread now, let alone buy the game. FF7 still isn't finished either and has just come to PC.

I look forward to the 5090 reviews to see what it can do, but have zero interest it buying even a 5060 or whatever.

New Doom i'm curious about, not played Eternal though, but likely won't need anything powerful if history with the engine is anything to go by.

There won't be any... My 4090 is overkill for the games in 2024 so hoping to get something that pushes it this year a bit more. ON the other hand I 'play' factorio half the time

I don't think there are any games coming to PC this year that will drive the need for grabbing a 5000 series card. Even next year is looking lean. NVIDIA is promoting Witcher 4 as the next "halo" title to showcase their GPUs but that probably won't launch until 2027/28 at the earliest. Of course, many people are looking forward to GTA 6, but there isn't an official launch date yet for PC, and it may not even hit consoles until 2026.

None, nobody is gonna make a game that can only be played (i.e. sold to) such a tiny market.

There will never be another Crysis unfortunately. The game industry has changed. I expect I wont need to upgrade my 3080 until the next generation of consoles is out.

I'm not sure how a 3080 is playing new titles at 4k max/near max settings, at least at FPS I'd find comfortable.

I've got a 3090 and I'm only at 3440x1440 and it struggles to maintain 60fps in some games unless I turn off RT and/or use one of the lower DLSS settings like balanced or performance.

But playing at 4k maxed out with RT isn't a need its a want and nice to have, a 5090 would only be "needed" if the game would only run at low settings with say DLSS help on a 5090 and was unplayable on anything less.

I didn't suggest otherwise, I'm just asking about 3080 performance at 4k, as considering I've got a 3090 and I'm playing at a lower resolution, I think OP must either be playing at settings a fair bit below max or is happier with lower framerates than I am.

Sorry, I read your reply as to Disco_P rather than the OP.

Not to mention the VRAM. I've got tittles (LMU, AC Evo) that are using 17-18GB @ 4K with the settings cranked.

4090 owner here too, what do I play most of the time? Factorio on my Steam Deck

Thought it would be interesting to check Steam to see what 'AAA' games I played for the first time in 2024:

Helldivers 2
Black Myth: Wukong
Silent Hill 2 (remake)
Dragon Age: The Veilguard

On Gamepass:
Call of duty: Black Ops 6
Indiana Jones and the Great circle.

6 games, not a huge amount really, but half were quite GPU intensive.

I replayed the entire Arkham game series in story order, including side scrolling ones at the start of the year.

The more 'Indie' titles I played in 2024

Lamplighters League (turn based)
Slay the Spire (deck builder)
Monster Train (deck builder)
Inscription (deck builder)
Nobody wants to die (First person detective)
Into the Breach (turn based)
Capes (turn based)

So my 4090 isn't doing much, really.

Using a 3080, the odd title like Alan Wake 2 and Indiana Jones needed high or medium size texture pools. I always have DLSS on which has been amazing to keep the frame rates up and also why I've kept on to mine so long too.

So far I'm looking forward to Monster Hunter Wilds and Avowed. I'll probably replay FF7 Rebirth and The Last of Us Part 2 with all the nicer PC trimmings. Kingdom Come Deliverance II is another big one to push the graphics card.

Lazily developed game? I'm interested in what requirements GTA VI will need though don't think we're seeing it this year.

There won't be any, no game will "need" a 5090 to run. For one that that would be commercial suicide, I don't know what the % of PC gamers have a 4090, but it will be tiny. A very large % will be playing on what enthusiasts would term "potato" cards I think i'm right in saying the most popular res is stil 1080p.
