EV general discussion

Quick q, how much capacity leeway do you all look for in a new EV? When the costs get released I might be tempted into a Puma Gen-E, my only use is doing 66mile round trip to work 4 times a week, pretty much 1/3 motorway, 1/3 a road, 1/3 city. I reckon that would be what,20-25kWh? Not sure if the 43kWh pack would be pushing it?

Yep wouldn't bother with a 43kwh; you'll need to wait for real world reviews but a 132 miles round trip will be pushing it in winter.

Any reason why you are looking at new? The likes of a used id3, Kona, niro etc would fit the bill

So I dropped the ID 7 off to VW yesterday.

Quick side story - they have me a 74 plate ID 4 and when I got in it, it came up with a windscreen wiper fault :P Are these cars made with slave labour with flat pack instructions or something?

Anyway, I get a call today to say “the good news is that all the faults were software related and have been rectified, you can pick it up when you’re ready”

As a reminder, here is the list:

  1. Windows going down when trying to put them up
  2. 12v battery low - can’t use app
  3. “Not connected to internet”
  4. Windows permanently fogging even with AC on
  5. CarPlay not connecting
  6. Not charging at preferred times (having to change setting each time)
  7. Car not charging at all (recent 21st/22nd Jan)
  8. Keyless entry not working
  9. Windscreen wipers juddering
  10. Brake pedal judder at lower speed, jolting car
  11. Infotainment crashing
  12. HUD crashing
  13. Twisted seatbelt from factory
  14. HUD/front resonates/rattles with music
  15. Trim in boot keeps coming out
  16. Paint bubbling

Now, they did say that the paint bubbling was actually residue, which I’m happy about as it means it’ll stay on original paint. That being said, it didn’t look or feel like that, but I did notice it right at the end of the wash with no time to check it properly.

Seatbelt also sorted.

But I’m sure you can also agree that some of those are surely not software related. I’ll be interested to report back when I get the car back.

I am skeptical but hopeful that everything is sorted.

Good job you got the software update for the boot trim :D

Seriously, that sounds like an absolutely **** show. Lemon car missed QC?

On that list, the biggest things are:

Not charging, brake pedal judder at low speeds (as in, when you’re coming to a stop it begins to vibrate/pulse and then you end up abruptly stopping) and wipers.

I’m really glad I have a second car as I have been caught with only having 20% battery to get to Brighton from Hampshire.

Is it any wonder why VW and Stellantis are struggling when they build cars to a worse level than the Chinese.

Woooah. Hang on a second, my Astra is fine...

...apart from every interior panel rattling, the bumpers being a different shade of white, the black roof being poorly masked with paint bubbles and scouring pad buffer trails, the interior being scratched when delivered, the rear seat belt warning randomly thinking that all three rear seats are occupied and a speaker buzz at certain frequencies.

Aside from that it is perfect :p

In its defence I hadn't set the pre-conditioning this morning and the app actually connected and switched the heating on while I had my coffee. That was a first!

@MrRockliffe do you know what version of software yours had, was it v4 or v5? As apparently the my24 cars either v4 can’t be upgraded to v5 (current is 5.2).

Okay I picked up the car and….

They didn’t sort the wipers - they’re on back order apparently with no given time frame.

They didn’t sort the seatbelt.

They haven’t sported the trim in the boot

I haven’t spent enough time to know if the other issues are rectified, but I’m not holding out much hope.

If they aren’t, the car shall be going back to the lease company and I’ll be looking at an alternative.

It’s taken 2 months to get it booked in, and to get it booked back in I’m looking at end of Feb.

Absolutely shocking experience so far.

Just want to add to the above though, the ID 7 is a clear and obvious step up from the ID 4.

Not just feature wise, but it just has a premium edge. Like going from a 2 to a 3 series.

I never thought the ID 7 was great for its class, but I’d be thoroughly peeved if I bought an ID 4.

I sound like I’m complaining a lot, and well, I am. But I don’t know if I’m just out of touch or have unrealistic expectations - car quality seems to be pants these days. I don’t understand how you could choose to go and buy a new car.

Get me back in a G20 3 series any day please.

Amen brother. My 330 had a better quality interior and the software/app was flawless. That said the facelift g20 wasn’t as good as the pre FL, and the i4 seemed to have lost a bit of quality. I5 is brilliant tho, as is the EQE, but they are near 70k :o

You are only complaining because you've got a product that gives you reason to. In isolation most of those faults could be excused if they pulled their finger out and got them sorted. The problem is they want you to wait weeks, pay for a courtesy car, then not fix the issues so you have to start the whole process again. Plus the sheer number of issues, unacceptable.

I say most of the faults could be excused, the charging one... nope. To come out to find the car hasn't charged is totally inexcusable.

Yeah I also found the new facelift to be a bit annoying.

Pre facelift is the sweet spot. It’s peak usability where the software adds to the experience, rather than using it as a way to make the car cheaper.

load of pre-reg iPaces seem to have hit the market with a nice discount, anything wrong with these or they just trying to hit mandates etc?

Already registered so form part of this year, dealers clearly then able to shift them quickly based on what they must have paid. Bit of a firesale which will upset many existing owners i imagine.

A question about EV Vehicle Tax.
Back in September the garage sent my form off to the DVLA to say I'd got an EV so will I hear from the DVLA when I've got to pay something?
I'm not good with money stuff.

You should have received a V5 registration in the post not long after you bought the car, as with an ICE car. I’d assume the DVLA are sending out tax reminders to all EV owners before 1st April - would be a harsh move not to…

What you CAN do, however, is go online and renew your tax now - you can do it any time without having to SORN the car. This will give you another 12 months before you have to pay anything, as the tax is only due at the next renewal AFTER 1st April. I did this yesterday using the 11 digit code on the front of the V5 and it works instantly.

Thanks for that
